Sylvia realized Gabriel was so tall that his head might be visible over the top of the bookshelf. She tugged on his collar, urging him to duck down.
Gabriel leaned in, lowering his head until his hot breath brushed against her ear.
His lips were less than an inch from hers.
Jenny suddenly spoke up. "What did you mean by that just now?"
Jonas, having not noticed anything, turned back to her, his nonchalant, joking demeanor returning. "It didn't mean anything. Just talking."
Jenny's expression fell, a wave of disappointment washing over her. Just then, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen and answered. "Mom."
"Jenny, when are you coming home?" Mrs. Jordan asked.
"In a couple of days," Jenny replied, looking down.
"Hurry back. Michell is free these next two days, so you two can finally meet!" Mrs. Jordan said cheerfully. "I showed him your picture, and he's very impressed. Your father and I have already talked it over. After you meet, you can get engaged by summer and be married before the year is out."
Jenny hated it when her family made decisions for her, but today, she didn't have the energy to argue. "Okay," she said quietly. "I'll be back as soon as I can."
"That's wonderful! Should I send you Michell's number so you two can start chatting?" Mrs. Jordan had suggested this before, but Jenny had refused. Seeing her daughter's softened stance, she brought it up again.
"Sure," Jenny said flatly. "Send it—"
Before she could finish, a figure stepped in front of her, snatched the phone from her hand, and held it to his ear. "Hello there!" he said with a grin.
Mrs. Jordan was clearly startled. "Who... who is this?"
"I'm a classmate of Jenny's from her art program," Jonas said, then added with deliberate, clear emphasis, "and her... boyfriend."
Jenny was speechless.
Into the phone, Jonas said brightly, "I'm an only child. And like your family, mine is also in business."
Mrs. Jordan laughed, feigning annoyance. "That Jenny! She should have just told me. Here I was, arranging a setup for her. No wonder she kept saying no!"
"It's my fault," Jonas said apologetically. "I should have called you sooner. Please don't blame Jenny. She's just very reserved."
Mrs. Jordan paused. Reserved? Was he talking about her daughter?
She hesitated. "Well, in that case, I'll go ahead and cancel the meeting with the other young man. He's been waiting for a while... I don't know how I'm going to tell him Jenny already has a boyfriend."
"If it's difficult for you, ma'am, just wait until we get back," Jonas offered. "I'll handle it."
