Sylvia gave the mercenary Kant’s home address.
The man gave a curt nod to show he understood. Seeing Kant hesitate, he unceremoniously scooped the boy up and threw him over his shoulder, then strode out of the cabin.
Kant struggled for a moment, his small voice crying out, “Sir! Miss Sylvia!”
His voice faded into the distance.
A lump formed in Sylvia’s throat, but she knew that sending Kant away was the best possible choice under the circumstances.
Outside the cabin, the men Gabriel had taken down had been helped up by their comrades. The seriously injured rested on the ground, while those with minor wounds came inside to await orders.
The masked man stepped outside to make a phone call. When he returned, he told his men, “Watch them. We’re waiting for instructions from above.”
“Yes, sir,” a few of them responded.
The masked man left, and the others followed, leaving only two mercenaries inside to guard Gabriel and Sylvia.
After standing for a moment, Gabriel suddenly lifted Sylvia, pivoted, and lowered them onto the bamboo bed. With their limbs bound, he couldn’t control the movement perfectly. He landed on top of her, and seeing her startled expression, he shifted his weight, rolling over so that she was lying on him instead.
The mercenaries, standing a few feet away, jumped in alarm and aimed their guns at them. But when they saw the pair were just lying on the bed and not attempting to escape, they slowly lowered their weapons.
Sylvia lifted her head slightly, looking down at the man beneath her with confusion.
Gabriel’s lips curved into a faint smile. “Don’t you think standing there trussed up like a Thanksgiving turkey is a little ridiculous? This is better, at least.”
Sylvia frowned. “How can you still smile?”
“I’ve been in far more dangerous situations than this,” Gabriel said calmly. “Don’t worry. I’m not that easy to kill. And as long as I’m alive, you won’t die either.”
Sylvia glanced at their guards. “What are they going to do with us?” she whispered.
“I don’t know. But since they didn’t kill me on the spot to avenge Giles, they must have another objective. If someone comes to negotiate, I’ll have them release you first.” He looked at her, his gaze unwavering. “When that happens, don’t worry about me. Just get down the mountain as fast as you can.”
“Are you scared?” he asked.
“No,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “With you here, how could I be scared?”
He shifted slightly to avoid putting too much pressure on her bound hands. He looked down at her long lashes and the elegant line of her nose. “When did we break up?” he asked softly.
Sylvia froze, lifting her head to look at him again.
Gabriel held her gaze. “Tell me.”
Sylvia was speechless. She glanced at the guards behind them. “Is this really the time to talk about that?” she whispered back.
They were surrounded by mercenaries seeking revenge for Giles, men who had entered the country illegally and wouldn’t hesitate to kill. Their lives were hanging by a thread, and she was in no mood for matters of the heart.
Gabriel’s eyes never left hers. “Right now, it’s the only thing I care about.”
