Lambert scoffed. “With her? I’m her ex-boyfriend, her ride-or-die…”
Before he could finish, Manley shot to his feet, his gaze dangerous. “You’re her what? I don’t think I heard you right. Say it again.”
“I’m her ex—”
Thwack! Manley’s fist connected with the side of his head. His eyes were flushed, looking both alluring and fierce. “If she had an ex, it would be me. You come to my turf trying to ride her coattails? I’ll kill you and then desecrate your corpse!”
Lambert’s lip was split. He glared at Manley, grinding his teeth. “This country has laws and human rights, you know. I’ll sue you. No, for illegally detaining me, I will definitely sue you!”
“This is my house. You think I’m scared of you?” Manley shoved his hands in his pockets, his tone flippant. He ordered his men, “Take him away. Beat him until he tells the truth.”
Seeing that Manley was completely unreasonable, even more arrogant than himself, Lambert clenched his jaw. “I know Stella!” he bit out. “I really know her. I came to this country for her.”
Hearing the name “Stella,” Manley’s expression shifted slightly, a hint of caution in his eyes. “What do you want with her?”
“I told you, we’re friends. Ride-or-die,” Lambert repeated haughtily.
“Ride-or-die?” Manley sneered. “You saved my Estelle?”
“She saved me!” Lambert’s handsome, chiseled features were filled with pride. “And we fought side-by-side.”
Manley knew a little about Estelle’s past, and hearing this, he started to believe him. “A grown man saved by a girl,” he scoffed. “Your ancestors must be rolling in their graves.”
Lambert didn’t understand the idiom but knew it wasn’t a compliment. He glared back, fuming, but said nothing.
Manley narrowed his eyes. “Then why were you following her?”
“I wanted to surprise her!”
Manley’s long lashes fluttered. He forced a playful tone. “Estelle, I’m back!”
Across the coffee table, Lambert let out a soft snort.
“What are you laughing at?” Manley snapped, turning a fierce glare on Lambert.
“Who are you talking to?” Estelle asked from the other end.
“A guy,” Manley said, then looked up. “What’s your name?”
Lambert lifted his chin. “Lambert,” he enunciated clearly.
“A guy named Lambert,” Manley said into the phone. “Says he knows you.”
