Estelle reached out and gently hugged him, whispering, “Manley, I spent a long time in a dark place, so I have the right to tell you: this will pass.”
Manley’s hand, gripping her wrist, trembled. He rested his forehead on her shoulder, murmuring her name over and over. “Estelle, Estelle…”
Along the quiet veranda, ornate glass lanterns cast a red glow, swaying gently in the night breeze, creating a dreamlike, enchanting scene.
Estelle felt a lump in her throat. “You’re drunk. Let me take you back to your room, okay?”
Manley shook his head and spoke in a muffled voice. “Next life, let’s meet sooner. It has to be before Jonathan, okay?”
His life, from this moment on, was already looking forward to the next.
Estelle’s voice was calm. “Jonathan and I will be together in the next life too.”
Manley slowly looked up, his eyes hazy with tears, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Then in the next life, I definitely won’t let you go so easily. I’ll steal you away if I have to.”
Estelle’s picturesque features were dead serious. “You can’t beat me, and you can’t beat Jonathan either.”
Manley was speechless.
Then, he suddenly laughed, a beautiful, tear-streaked smile that was devastatingly stunning. “How did I fall in love with such a heartless woman?”
Estelle stared at him. “Next life, let’s be family. Brother and sister, so we can be together from birth.”
Manley’s gaze was unwavering, as if trying to burn her current image into his mind. He slowly shook his head. “No. Next life, I will not watch you marry someone else again.”
Either they wouldn't meet, or they would be together forever. He couldn’t bear to go through the pain of watching her marry another man a second time.
He gripped her wrist and lowered his eyes, murmuring as if to himself, “Why is it that even when I’m this miserable, I still feel like knowing you was the best thing that ever happened to me?”
The thought of not meeting her in the next life was enough to make him panic.
Estelle knew he was truly drunk. “Stop messing around, okay? Let me take you back to bed.”
