Chuck continued, “This requires cooperation. If you don’t cooperate, I’ll just have to kiss you a few more times. I don’t mind. Ms. Harriet is beautiful, and I’d be happy to.”
His expression was serious, his voice low, as if he were debating a rival in a high-stakes business negotiation.
He then lowered his voice even further. “But if Ms. Harriet would rather be kissed and see the other groomsmen punished, then pretend I never said a thing.”
As the crowd watched on, Charlie remarked to Jonathan with a knowing look, “Finding the thread was easy. Threading the needle is the hard part.”
Jonathan, however, looked completely at ease. He glanced at his watch and said calmly, “Chuck will have it done in thirty seconds.”
Charlie raised an eyebrow in surprise. “That confident?”
Jonathan simply gave him a look that said, *Just watch*, and said nothing more.
Someone in the crowd continued to heckle, “President Raye, are you mesmerized by Ms. Harriet’s beauty?”
“President Raye, if you can’t do it, let me try!”
“Just grab her and hold on tight! Forget about being a gentleman!”
Harriet remained composed amidst the teasing. Looking at Chuck, she smiled slowly. “I’ve finally had the pleasure of witnessing President Raye in action today. It’s been well worth it.”
“So what’s your decision, Ms. Harriet?” Chuck asked.
Harriet smiled. “To cooperate, of course. For the sake of Mr. Lamont getting to his bride as soon as possible.”
Chuck nodded. “As expected of Ms. Macclain’s most trusted and capable right-hand.”
“Likewise.”
After a brief exchange of business-like compliments, the tension eased.
Chuck leaned in, his half-lidded eyes sweeping past her red lips to focus on the eye of the needle.
This time, they worked together, and the red thread slid smoothly through the hole.
Charlie’s gaze lingered on Emily for a moment before he asked with a smile, “And what’s this challenge?”
Sallie Macclain, holding a large bunch of balloons, stepped forward. The time she had spent maturing had washed away her earlier immaturity, leaving her brighter and more cheerful. With a celebratory smile, she announced,
“Congratulations, groom, on passing two challenges to reach me! This round is called ‘Even a Hero Succumbs to a Beauty’!”
Carson interjected, “You are all certainly beauties, but how exactly are we meant to succumb?”
Sallie waved the balloons. “We’re all friends here. We won’t make it too hard on you!”
Carson’s gaze flickered to Marina, a handsome smile on his face. “Then we thank all you lovely bridesmaids in advance.”
Marina returned his smile, looking perfectly innocent. Sophia and Emily, both naturally gentle and approachable, seemed even less threatening.
“Let’s hear the rules,” Jason said with a calm smile.
