Gladys put on an exaggerated expression. “Evelyn, you're just too modest! If I were the Quintin family's heiress, I'd want the whole world to know about it!”
Evelyn pressed her lips together, saying nothing.
“In any case, if the Quintins ever throw a party for you, you’d better remember to invite me!”
“I will!” Evelyn nodded a bit awkwardly.
Sensing Evelyn’s lack of enthusiasm, Gladys probed gently, “What’s wrong? Is something bothering you?”
Evelyn lowered her gaze, her tone weary. “It’s just been a rough couple of days. Why are some women so scheming?”
Gladys immediately said, “Who upset you? Tell me—I’ll confront her for you!”
“It’s a friend of my mother’s,” Evelyn replied, her face full of annoyance. “She deliberately got close to my mother at an art show, and now she’s trying to stir things up between us. She’s really unbearable!”
“Who is it? That’s disgusting!” Gladys demanded, her voice low with anger.
“Sylvia!” Evelyn looked at Gladys. “Do you know her?”
Gladys’s eyes widened. “Of course I do!”
Evelyn feigned surprise. “How do you know her?”
Gladys then explained how Sylvia had seduced Eugene, deliberately manipulated her grandmother, and even tricked her into writing her dowry into the will for Sylvia.
“I’ve never seen anyone so shameless. She’s still clinging to my grandmother’s dowry.”
A subtle glint flickered in Evelyn’s eyes. “I never imagined she was that kind of person!”
Gladys hurried to add, “My cousin was fooled by her, but he’s finally seen her true colors and already broken up with her!”
Evelyn asked, “What about your grandmother’s dowry—can you get it back?”
“Let’s go!” Gladys said brightly, linking her arm with Evelyn’s as they walked toward the grand hall.
The hall was dazzlingly decorated. The ladies sat gracefully in their seats, and a tall, three-tiered cake stood at the center.
Mrs. Winters was waiting for Evelyn. When she saw Evelyn approach, she took her hand warmly and led her to the cake, beaming. “You being here to celebrate with me today already makes this birthday perfect. Now, I’d love for you to join me in cutting the cake and bringing me good luck.”
Evelyn smiled. “I’d be honored!”
The two of them cut the cake together, as the guests cheered and offered their congratulations.
After taking a symbolic bite or two of cake, Evelyn went to the restroom to touch up her lipstick. Picking up her purse, she noticed a jewelry box inside that hadn’t been there before. Opening it, she found a luxurious designer necklace. Beneath it was a small note with the name “Mrs. Harper” and a contact number.
Evelyn’s lips curled into a faint smile. She put the necklace back in her bag, took out her lipstick, and reapplied it.
The afternoon continued with Mrs. Winters and her guests chatting, enjoying tea, and playing cards.
