On her way back to the office, the more Milanda thought about what had happened, the angrier she became. Unable to hold it in, she called Eugene and told him everything that had happened at his company that day.
Eugene was taken aback. “I never asked anyone to contact Sylvia!”
Milanda replied heatedly, “So someone set a trap for our boss on purpose? Luckily, she had an unexpected emergency today and I went in her place. Otherwise, those people would have gotten exactly what they wanted!”
Eugene was silent for a moment, then his tone turned cold. “I’ll get to the bottom of this and make sure Sylvia gets an explanation.”
He added, “Tell Sylvia to be extra careful these next few days. And let her know that if I need to contact her, I’ll call her directly—no assistants involved.”
“Got it!”

After hanging up, Eugene immediately called Mrs. Winters. “Mom, where are you?”
Mrs. Winters, in the middle of a card game and in high spirits after winning some money, replied, “I’m playing cards with Mrs. Lee and the others. What’s going on?”
Eugene got straight to the point. “Did you have someone deliberately insult Sylvia?”
Mrs. Winters hesitated for a second, then quickly denied it. “No, I would never do something like that!”
“Then who did?” Eugene pressed.
Mrs. Winters’ eyes darted, but she said nothing.
“Mom, you transferred $800,000 out of the company account a couple of days ago. I haven’t told Dad yet. If you don’t tell me the truth, I’ll have accounting start a full audit right now.”
Mrs. Winters was startled. “I have shares in the company—what’s wrong with me moving some money?”
“You and Dad hold those shares jointly. You can explain it to him yourself,” Eugene said icily, preparing to hang up.
Fuming, Gladys slammed down the phone. Her father also worked at the company, and she was about to call him to complain when Eugene’s call came through. She answered, her anger barely contained.
“On what grounds are you firing me?”
Eugene’s voice was icy. “Gladys, Grandma’s will no longer has anything to do with Sylvia. If you dare target her again, not only will I throw you out of the company, I’ll make public all the bribes you’ve taken from clients.”
Gladys’ confidence crumbled. She stammered, “Bribes? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“If I’m bringing it up, you can be sure I have the evidence. Gladys, don’t push your luck.”
Gladys fell silent.
“Pack your things and leave the company. Immediately,” Eugene said coldly, and hung up.
Gladys was left furious and feeling wronged. She had done all this, partly to vent her frustration over Grandma’s will by taking it out on Sylvia, and partly for Evelyn’s sake—Evelyn was going to be Eugene’s wife, so wasn’t this all for Eugene as well? Yet in the end, she was the one being thrown out.
