Sylvia suddenly burst into laughter, her smile lighting up her entire face—radiant and alluring. “Mr. Carnes, you really don’t beat around the bush!”
Gabriel ignored her teasing and smiled, “I’m almost at your office. I’ll wait for you downstairs.”
Sylvia was momentarily taken aback but quickly nodded. “I’ll be right there.”
After hanging up, Sylvia gathered her things and got ready to call it a day.
Milanda walked in just as Sylvia was packing up. She looked surprised. “Boss, you’re leaving so early today?”
Sylvia was in a great mood. “Yes, it’s already the end of the workday, isn’t it?”
Milanda squinted, grinning. “It’s normal for everyone else to leave on time, but it’s a rare thing for you. It’s almost as rare as you falling in love!”
Sylvia kept her head down, sorting through her files, and asked offhandedly, “How’s your relationship going? I haven’t heard you mention your boyfriend lately.”
Before, when they chatted, Milanda could hardly stop talking about her boyfriend.
“Not so great,” Milanda replied, her smile fading and her tone turning a bit gloomy. “We just got together, and now my boyfriend’s being transferred for work—he has to go to France for two years. I’ve been thinking about breaking up.”
“Breaking up?” Sylvia looked up, surprised.
“Yeah, I’m thinking about it,” Milanda sighed. “We just started dating, and he’s about to leave. It makes me feel like his career is more important to him than I am. And I can’t do long-distance—it’s just too tough. We might not even see each other once a year, and we wouldn’t really know what’s going on in each other’s lives. If anything happened, we couldn’t be there for each other. I just can’t accept that.”
Sylvia’s expression grew pensive, and she said softly, “You’re right, that is hard. If you can’t accept it, it’s better to be honest sooner rather than later.”
“That’s what I think, too. Otherwise, it’ll just build up between us, and even if we stay together, we’ll end up unhappy,” Milanda said. “It’s just hard to let go.”
Sylvia replied, sounding casual, “With time, you’ll forget.”
Milanda looked a bit wistful. “It’s kind of sad to think that I’ll forget.”
Sylvia smiled gently and didn’t say anything more. She grabbed her bag and headed out.
When she stepped out of the office building, Gabriel’s car was already waiting. Sylvia opened the passenger door, and the first thing she saw was a huge bouquet of icy blue roses. She froze for a moment.
