Back in the car, Gabriel started the engine and drove off.
In the dim light, his jawline looked sharp and severe. “Looks like Evelyn’s been stirring up plenty of trouble behind the scenes.”
Sylvia’s eyes grew thoughtful. “She’s trying to use the Winters family’s influence.”
At Estelle’s wedding, she had already noticed the Winters family fawning over Evelyn. Since they also held a grudge against her, Evelyn had taken advantage of that. Of course, when it comes to using others, it’s often a two-way street.
Gabriel said, “I’ll talk to Old Mr. Quintin when we get back. We should announce your identity as soon as possible and kick Evelyn out.”
Sylvia’s eyes sparkled as she smiled and shook her head. “No, don’t tell Grandpa.”
“Hm?” Gabriel looked puzzled.
Her eyes danced with mischief. “The Winters family wants to attach themselves to Evelyn because of her status as Ms. Quintin, and Evelyn wants to use their influence too. The stronger their alliance, the more it’ll hurt when it all falls apart. Let’s just sit back and watch.”
“Besides, if you tell Grandpa now, he probably wouldn’t believe what Evelyn’s really like. He’s always liked her. Let’s not upset him unnecessarily.”
Gabriel nodded. “Whatever you want to do, I’m with you.”
Sylvia leaned back against her seat, tilting her head to look at him with a lazy smile. “Mr. Carnes, you always go along with me. I’m honestly flattered. I’m just afraid you’ll spoil me rotten.”
Gabriel shot her a sidelong glance. “That’s fine. I can afford to spoil you.”
His tone was as usual, but his words made Sylvia’s heart skip a beat. A powerful wave of satisfaction washed over her, lifting her up, tossing her higher and higher.
Her heart soared, but a sliver of fear clung to her—afraid she might fall from this height into the abyss below.
Just like that night.
Gabriel had no choice but to agree. He realized that his new rule for making decisions had become: whatever makes her happy.
......
In the darkened theater, a movie played on the big screen, chosen at random.
As the mood intensified, Gabriel’s breath grew heavy and hoarse in Sylvia’s ear as he murmured, “Nana, don’t see Eugene anymore.”
Pressed against his collarbone, Sylvia said nothing—she couldn’t even speak.
“Did you hear me?”
“Mmm…”

As the plot thicken. Adrian is done for and he can't try to control Norah, so he'd probably tattle to Janice who's gone for two weeks. Thank you soooo much for the updates....
