Joseph Mullins sat down right beside Sylvia Jarvis, his eyes straightforward and full of youthful energy. “Did you graduate from college yet?”
Sylvia smiled softly. “Do I still look like a student to you?”
Joseph responded with a cheerful laugh. “I’m not sure—I just think there’s something special about you!”
Her eyes were striking—captivating and deep, as if they held stories and wisdom beyond her years, yet her features carried a pure, gentle grace. She seemed to balance innocence and allure, making her naturally magnetic.
Sylvia replied, “I never attended college. I started working quite early.”
Joseph looked a little surprised and somewhat regretful. “That’s really a pity.” Thinking she must have had a tough time financially before returning to the Quintin family, he quickly added, “But now that you’re back home, you could always go back to school if you want to keep learning.”
Sylvia found herself a bit interested. “That did cross my mind!”
“What would you like to study? I could help you look into schools—I’ve actually been researching this lately, since I’m also thinking about studying abroad for a few years.”
“I’ll start by gathering some information,” Sylvia said.
Old Mr. Quintin looked up and smiled. “What are you two chatting about over there? The food’s getting cold—come on, let’s eat!”
At his words, everyone looked over. Sylvia met the deep, unfathomable gaze of the man sitting diagonally across from her; she tried to read something in his expression but found only a profound, cold darkness.
The others made a few lighthearted jokes and then continued eating.

After dinner, everyone lingered in conversation. Old Mr. Quintin brought up how Sylvia had recently started learning to paint and asked Albert Mullins to take a look at her work.
After a round of modest excuses, Albert went to the small study to view Sylvia’s paintings.
Sylvia knew that, even though Albert was Old Mr. Quintin’s student, he was accomplished in his own right, and she was genuinely eager for his advice.
