The man's hand tensed around the teacup, sending gentle ripples across the surface of the tea.
He set the cup down, turning his head slightly. His deep, inscrutable gaze landed on the woman curled in his arms.
Sylvia rested a hand on his shoulder, meeting his eyes. “My wise Gab, don’t let anyone drive a wedge between us.”
Gabriel’s dark eyes were unfathomable. “I only trust what I see.”
“What is it you saw?” Sylvia asked, her head tilted, half-reclining on his shoulder. Her breath warmed his jawline, and her enchanting eyes sparkled. “Is what you see more important, or what you feel?”
Gabriel remained silent.
Sylvia let out a soft sigh, her tone carrying a hint of helplessness and grievance. “Then why don’t you cut out my heart and see for yourself if there’s anyone else in there?”
Gabriel turned and pressed Sylvia down onto the sofa, shielding her with his body. He kissed her passionately.
Sylvia abandoned all reservations, responding to his kiss with her head tilted back, unrestrainedly pouring out all her longing under the dim lights.
Others in the room held their hostesses in even more suggestive ways, so no one paid much attention to them.
Only Nash was secretly startled. After years of working with Sylvia, he thought he knew her well; no matter how important the client or great the temptation, she had never relied on her looks to get ahead.
Tonight—
She’s sacrificing so much... for him? He felt both moved and worried.
Sylvia leaned in closer, her body nearly pressed to his chest, and murmured in his ear, “I didn’t get it wrong, did I? Wasn’t everything you taught me meant for pleasing you?”
Gabriel’s breath caught, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Someone approached with a toast, freeing Sylvia from Gabriel’s arms. She glanced over and saw Nash signaling to her, so she stood and walked over.
As soon as she sat down, Nash poured her a glass of juice and spoke in a low voice, “Ms. Jarvis, you really don’t have to do so much for me. I’m sure I can win The Lane Group over on my own merits.”
Sylvia held her juice, fighting back laughter, though her face reflected apparent worry. “Earlier I saw Mr. Bard and Claire deep in conversation. I was worried he might be swayed by her.”
Nash frowned. “Even so, I can’t let you make such sacrifices. We’ve worked together for years. I’d rather miss this business opportunity than see you get hurt.”
