His meticulously planned counterattack was just one step from success, only to be completely derailed by Mrs. Winters’ sudden appearance. And now, without his even realizing it, Mrs. Winters was already making arrangements for the rest of his life.
Eugene was like a rare breath of fresh air. But to stand out in the scheming and dirty chaos of the Winters family was almost impossible.
How would Eugene deal with a situation like today's?
His two broken ribs hadn’t even healed yet, and now his own mother was there to cut even deeper—sometimes only family can wound the places that even broken bones cannot touch.
Feeling Sylvia squeeze his hand, he turned his head. She immediately leaned closer, intertwining her fingers with his to show goodwill, and gave him a gentle smile. “Thank you for coming to pick me up yourself, Mr. Carnes!”
He gave her a cool glance. “If I hadn’t, were you planning to stick with Eugene through thick and thin, Ms. Jarvis?”
Sylvia arched a brow, suddenly stopped walking, let go of his hand, and wrapped her arms tightly around his waist.
Gabriel snorted. “Here you go again.”
She always tried to soften him up first whenever she got herself into trouble.
In the quiet hotel hallway, Sylvia hugged him tightly, looking up with a beautiful, slightly mischievous smile. “Would you believe me if I said I did it on purpose?”
“Oh?” he arched an eyebrow.
“I didn’t call you to tell you I was going out for dinner on purpose,” Sylvia explained. “If you came to pick me up after work and I wasn’t there, you’d definitely ask where I went, right? I timed it out—figured Mrs. Winters would probably show up around when you did. I was counting on you to save me from that mess.”
Arguing or trying to reason with someone like Mrs. Winters was the last thing she’d do—totally irrational, bottom-of-the-barrel strategy. She’d just been waiting for the right moment to leave, and Gabriel happened to arrive just in time. Both Mrs. Winters and Gabriel had shown up earlier than she expected.
Her answer clearly pleased Gabriel. He reached up and pinched her cheek. “What if I hadn’t shown up?”

It was already late by the time they returned. As Sylvia went back to her room, she ran into Georgia in the hallway.
Georgia was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, smiling teasingly. “Back together with Gab again, huh?”
Sylvia had changed from her business suit into a loose T-shirt, her hair styled into a half-ponytail that made her look fresher and even more youthful than usual.
She smiled lightly. “Mom, why are you still up?”
“I was planning to wait up for you to talk about something,” Georgia said, glancing at the time, “but it’s too late now. Let’s wait until the weekend, when you have more time.”
