They chatted for a while before each turning to their work. Soon, Emily received a call from Orval—he confirmed the time and place for their meeting, and she quickly gathered her things and set off.

It was another Sterling Properties development, now in its final stages. The construction site was bustling and a bit chaotic as work wrapped up, so Orval instructed Emily to stick with him and not wander off.

Orval found a site supervisor and asked for a set of construction plans, handing them over to Emily for her to review.

The June sun was searing—after just a few moments standing in its glare, Emily felt as if she might be baked dry. She quickly found a patch of shade, sat down, and began to carefully study the layout of the property.

About half an hour later, Orval returned with a man dressed in a simple shirt. The two were similar in age and seemed to be old friends.

“Sanderson, let me introduce you to a bright young lady!” Orval called Emily over, grinning as he made the introductions. “This is Emily—she's an assistant designer, very focused and sharp.”

He then turned to Emily. “Sanderson is the person in charge of this whole project—if you ever come by to check things out and see him on-site, you can always turn to him for help.”

Emily greeted him politely, “Mr. Sanderson.”

Sanderson, whose round face was kindly, asked, “Where do you work?”

“Paragon Pixel Design,” Emily answered.

“Oh, I've heard of them,” Sanderson nodded in recognition.

Wiping the sweat from his brow, Orval said, “It’s way too hot out here. Let’s find somewhere to sit and talk.”

Sanderson motioned them inside. “Come to my office.”

The three of them made their way to the site office—a simple, temporary structure, but thankfully air-conditioned. The blast of cool air was a huge relief.

Sanderson had someone bring them bottles of water, and once seated, he and Orval started discussing the project. Emily listened quietly as they talked about construction progress, the real-world hurdles faced when implementing the designs, and the processes for approving new materials and design changes.

Much of this was new territory for Emily. She pulled out her notebook and pen, taking notes as she listened.
