Xavier had only intended to comfort her, but one look at her face told him exactly what was running through her mind. His expression instantly darkened.
Her mood completely lifted, Norah smiled brightly. "Well, since we bought them, we might as well eat them. Can't let them go to waste!"
She wiped one of the apples clean with a tissue and offered it to him.
Xavier refused. He wasn't eating it.
"Fine, I'll eat it myself!" Norah took a massive bite, the loud crunch of the crisp, juicy apple echoing through the quiet car.
Xavier's throat bobbed involuntarily.
Norah took several more bites, devouring half the apple in seconds before turning to him. "Are you sure you don't want any? It's incredibly sweet!"
Best twenty bucks she had ever spent.
Keeping his eyes fixed on the dark road, Xavier casually remarked, "Orchard owners usually spray heavy pesticides on their crops specifically to stop tourists from grabbing them off the branches."
Norah's eyes widened in sheer horror. She stared at the half-eaten apple in her hand, looking like she was about to burst into tears. "Why didn't you tell me that earlier?!"
"I just remembered," Xavier replied dryly.
"What do I do?! Am I going to get poisoned?" Norah puffed her cheeks out, glaring at him with pure outrage. "If this gives me brain damage or cripples me, I'll make you take care of me for the rest of my life!"
Xavier couldn't hold back a laugh. "How is this my fault?"
"You're the one who bought them!" she declared righteously.
