Once inside, Norah shut the door and started looking around for mouse holes.
Leila leaned against the window, smiling. "Even without holes, they'll find a way in. Mice are relentless. They probably just climbed through the window."
"I hate mice more than anything," Norah said, looking dejected. "I had one in my apartment back in J City, and I have no idea how it got in."
Leila's eyes gleamed with curiosity. "You rent an apartment in J City?"
"Yeah!" Norah nodded.
"Well," Leila probed cautiously, "once you and Mr. Flemmings get married, you won't have to rent anymore, right? He seems pretty well-off."
"Him?" Norah sighed heavily. "He doesn't have any money. His car is the only thing worth anything, and even if he sold it, he still couldn't afford a house. Real estate in J City is ridiculous."
Leila chuckled. "Well, I certainly wouldn't get married without a house. Having your own place is the only way to feel secure."
"I feel the same way!" Norah nodded in agreement before asking, "When are you and Dylan tying the knot?"
"Probably around the end of the year. Our jobs are steady, so we agreed to start planning in the second half of the year," Leila replied.
"Did you guys buy a house yet?" Norah asked, her eyes wide with feigned innocence.
Leila offered a tight smile. "Soon. We're already looking."
"That's amazing. H City is just as expensive as J City. You guys must be loaded!" Norah looked appropriately envious. "Who knows when Xavier and I will ever be able to afford our own place."
Flattered by the praise, Leila felt a surge of superiority. "Keep working hard, and you'll get there!"
Norah shrugged, looking sullen. "Relying on a paycheck means I won't have a nest egg until I'm old and gray. If only a bag of cash would just drop out of the sky and land in my lap!"
Hearing this, a dark glint flashed in Leila's eyes. She lowered her voice. "Norah, why don't you and Xavier just drop this whole Donovan family business?"
"What?" Norah stared at her in shock.
"I told you, it's none of your business! Just because you can't afford a house doesn't mean you can stop us from buying one. You're just jealous!" Leila snapped.
Before Norah could fire back, a voice echoed from the yard. "Mrs. Donovan, get out here!"
It was the woman who had extorted five thousand dollars from Xavier over the orchids—Mrs. Potts. Still wearing that same floral dress with her curly hair bouncing, she screamed at the top of her lungs.
"Mrs. Donovan! Are those two guests of yours still here? Tell them to get their asses out here!"
Norah blinked. She hadn't even gone to feed the rabbits today!
Why was trouble knocking on their door again?
Ignoring Leila, she hurried downstairs.
At the bottom of the steps, she bumped into Xavier. They exchanged a bewildered look.

As the plot thicken. Adrian is done for and he can't try to control Norah, so he'd probably tattle to Janice who's gone for two weeks. Thank you soooo much for the updates....
