Staring at the closed door and then at the two beds crammed into the room, Norah let out an awkward laugh. "We might as well just sleep like this. That way, if a mouse scares me in the middle of the night, I won't have to go wake you up. Plus, we shared a room at the hotel anyway."
Thinking back to how terrified she had been, curling into a ball under the covers, Xavier didn't have the heart to refuse. "You shower first. I'm going out for a smoke."
With that, he turned, opened the door, and left.
Norah immediately hopped into the air, flopped face-first onto the bed, and muffled her squeals of laughter into the mattress.
After her shower, Norah was tucked into bed, almost drifting off by the time Xavier finally returned.
He grabbed his clothes and headed straight into the bathroom. Soon, the sound of rushing water echoed through the small space.
The mental image of the water trailing down his body sent her mind racing uncontrollably. Her face burned hotter by the second, and a restless heat stirred in her chest.
A few minutes later, the bathroom door clicked open, and Norah instinctively squeezed her eyes shut.
Assuming she was asleep, Xavier didn't say a word. He simply climbed into his bed and switched off the light.
The room plunged into darkness and absolute silence. Norah inhaled quietly, her own heartbeat thumping wildly in her ears.
They had shared a room at the hotel, yet for some reason, sleeping in the same space now made her impossibly nervous. But beyond the nerves, there was a faint, undeniable thread of anticipation.
Maybe it was because the room was so small, pushing them closer together. Or maybe it was because this was their last night together.
As her eyes adjusted to the dark, the moonlight filtered in, painting the room in sharp detail.
The deep mountain night was exceptionally quiet—so quiet she could hear the crickets chirping in the grass below, night birds passing through the trees, and even the faint whispers of the wind.
The bright moonlight spilled through the wooden window frame, casting intricate shadows across the floor, creating a remarkably romantic atmosphere.
Knowing Xavier was right there brought a deep sense of security, and she unknowingly drifted into a deep sleep.
She didn't know how long had passed when a sudden rustling sound jolted her awake. Opening her eyes, the moonlight revealed a mouse scurrying down from the window frame.
Her eyes went wide with terror. She bolted upright, leaped off the mattress, and sprinted straight for the other bed, diving headfirst under Xavier's covers.
