Seeing Circe getting manhandled, Coco lunged toward Carol, barking furiously.
Startled, Carol stumbled backward, tripping over a potted plant behind her. She let out a piercing shriek as she tumbled to the ground.
With a loud crash, she shattered a celadon planter. A piece of broken porcelain grazed her, and she screamed again.
Xavier frowned, stepping forward to grab her arm and haul her up.
Carol scrambled to her feet, looking completely disheveled. She had only scraped her elbow; her dramatic screams were purely out of shock.
But Circe, who had been clutched tightly in her arms, had taken the brunt of the fall. The small cat hit the ground hard, and a jagged piece of porcelain sliced into its abdomen. A faint line of crimson began to seep into Circe’s snow-white fur.
Circe leaped onto the roof of the wooden house, meowing frantically while licking the wound.
Xavier stepped closer to inspect the injury. The cat looked at him with sheer misery before jumping onto his shoulder.
“That scared me to death!” Carol complained, brushing the dirt off her clothes. She kicked a piece of broken pottery out of her way and shot a venomous glare at Coco for causing the mess.
Coco, still leashed, paced in tight circles, radiating aggression toward her.
“Did the cat get hurt too?” Carol gasped, noticing the blood on Circe’s stomach.
Xavier brushed his fingers over the blood. “I’m going to get something to stop the bleeding.”
“It’s dangerous for a kitten that small to get hurt,” Carol said quickly. “We should take it to a vet.”
Xavier scooped Circe up. Without hesitating, he turned and strode out the door.
“I’ll come with you!” Carol hurried after him.
There was a pet clinic inside the Movie Center that could handle minor injuries. Xavier got the directions and started walking.
A light rain was falling. Carol borrowed an umbrella from Damian and chased after Xavier into the drizzle.
Zachary gave Damian a clueless, bewildered look.
Norah kept her tone light and breezy. “I’m going to miss you guys. I’ll come visit when I have free time!”
Having observed Carol during her last two visits, Damian knew she had an ulterior motive and didn’t genuinely care for their boss. But Xavier seemed completely blind to it.
Hearing Norah’s goodbye made Damian’s heart heavy. “I know you’ll be back,” he said quietly.
Norah lowered her gaze, a bitter smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She took a deep breath. “I won’t be back for a while. I was hoping to take Circe home with me today.”
“The boss and Ms. Carol just took Circe with them!” Zachary blurted out.
Norah froze. “Took Circe where?”
“No idea!” Zachary shook his head blankly.
