In the darkness, his voice cut through the silence. "They're gone. What's got you so jumpy now?"
Norah's ears burned crimson. She obviously wasn't going to admit that she was completely flustered by their proximity. She kept her eyes glued to the ground and mumbled, "Why did you yank me down like that?"
"Weren't you the one panicking?" Gonzalez shot back effortlessly.
She threw him a mild glare, then leaned over the rock to make absolutely sure the couple was out of sight before standing up straight. "That Caleb is such a jerk," she muttered. "His girlfriend literally just told us they were planning to get married once their careers settled, and he's out here pulling this!"
Gonzalez stood up, brushing off his clothes. "On one hand, he has a steady, comfortable girlfriend of several years. On the other, he has a wild, attractive stranger who is richer than him and strokes his ego. Do you honestly think most men have the willpower to resist that?"
"So he's actually into Lorelei?" she asked, appalled.
Gonzalez raised a brow. "Not necessarily. He's probably just chasing the thrill."
Norah crossed her arms, fuming. "Isn't he terrified his girlfriend will find out?"
"Lust makes people reckless," Gonzalez said coldly. "You think he's weighing the consequences right now?"
She let out a dry laugh. "You sure seem to know a lot about this, Uncle Gonzalez!"
His expression instantly hardened into something intensely serious. "I am analyzing human behavior based on the facts. Do not project that onto me."
They kept their voices low as they walked back to camp. Norah tilted her head at him. "I was just kidding! Sara was praising you and Adrian earlier, and I didn't quite get it, but now I do."
Gonzalez had absolutely no desire to be lumped into the same category as Adrian, so he chose not to respond.
When they reached her tent, Norah stifled a yawn and slipped his jacket off, handing it back to him. "I'm going to bed. Goodnight, Uncle Gonzalez."
He nodded. "Sleep well. I'm right next door."
The simple reassurance in his words made her feel inexplicably safe. She smiled and ducked into her tent.
Gonzalez stood perfectly still, waiting until the rustling of her sleeping bag stopped entirely before heading to his own tent.

Someone needs to send a new picture of Trevor to Oliver and Luke so that they will get their requested reports to Gonzalez asap. If they didn't know, now they know what awaits them if they continue to disrespect and NOT follow orders....
