Sara gagged again, and Jenny leaped to her feet, fleeing back to her side of the room.
Seeing Jenny return in defeat, Gillian York leaned in and muttered, "With Norah sitting right there, Adrian is never going to give us the time of day. Just drop it."
Jenny gritted her teeth in a silent fury. "I refuse to believe I can't beat her."
Gillian's eyes gleamed with calculation as she handed Jenny a fresh drink. "Don't let it get to you. It's a long game. Once she transfers to our department, you'll have plenty of chances to put her in her place."
Jenny grabbed the glass and downed the liquor in one bitter gulp.

Once Jenny was out of earshot, Sara collapsed back against the sofa, bursting into a fit of triumphant laughter.
Her infectious energy caught on, and soon Adrian and Norah were laughing along with her.
"You're something else," Adrian said, shaking his head in sheer appreciation.
Sara flashed a cocky smirk. "You think I survived years of dodging sleazy businessmen purely on luck?"
Jenny's amateur theatrics were child's play in comparison.
Impressed by her sharp wits, Adrian meant every word of his previous offer. "Seriously, come work for me. Whatever you're making now, I'll double it on day one."
"Thanks for the olive branch, Mr. Chambers," Sara said, sliding back over to sit beside Norah. She shook her head. "But I'll pass for now. I'm up for a promotion soon, and after grinding this long, I'm not ready to walk away from it."
Adrian let the subject drop, though he couldn't hide his regret.
The trio kept chatting, their moods soaring as the drinks kept flowing.
Gonzalez slowly lifted his head. His gaze was striking and predatory, cutting through her with razor-sharp intensity. "Whoever called you in, go sit with them."
The chilling dismissal sent a shiver straight down the woman's spine.
Forcing an awkward smile, she set the lighter down and practically bolted across the room.
Gonzalez's phone buzzed with a message. After replying, he mindlessly scrolled through Facebook, his expression darkening into a hard scowl when he paused on a new photo on his feed.
Suddenly, Trevor hurried over, his face lined with panic. "Gonzalez, Ewan Dawkins just called. He said he's only ever dealt with Caelan, so Caelan has to be the one to sign the contract tonight. If not, Mr. Dawkins isn't coming."
Caelan Hanson was Oliver Hanson's nephew, a mid-level executive Gonzalez had fired just days ago after catching him taking bribes from clients.
Tonight was supposed to be the final contract signing between the Hanson corporation and KN Group's J City branch. They were already over an hour past the scheduled meeting time. By calling now with this specific demand, Dawkins was making a blatant, hostile power play.
