Just like last time, when they arrived, Damian had the restaurant staff lined up in a neat row, welcoming them as if they were corporate executives.
Norah feigned confusion. "Why is it completely empty in here? Is business that bad? Is the food terrible?"
Damian scrambled to explain. "No, no! We just didn't open for regular business today. We were waiting for you and the boss."
Gonzalez brought a hand to his forehead, hiding a subtle smile.
Norah paced slowly, looking around. She even ran a finger across a tabletop, checking for dust, before giving a curt nod.
"I rarely dine in small places like this. I only came last time out of respect for Ms. Sampson. If the food isn't up to standard, I'll have Mr. Hanson fire every last one of you!"
Damian offered an ingratiating smile. "Don't you worry, the flavors will definitely meet your standards."
"Fine." Norah put on a reluctant expression. "I'll give Mr. Hanson the benefit of the doubt. Just make sure everything is spotless. My stomach is incredibly delicate; I can't tolerate anything unclean."
"It's impeccably clean. The meat is fresh, and we washed the vegetables three times," Damian promised.
Norah nodded. "Then hurry up and cook. I'm starving."
Damian shot Gonzalez a glance and quickly ushered Zachary and the others toward the kitchen.
He left one waiter by Norah and Gonzalez's table to attentively pour their tea.
"You go help out too. We don't need you hovering!" Norah ordered.
"Right away!" The young waiter quickly retreated.
Once they were alone, a sly laugh escaped Norah's lips. "How was my acting?"
Gonzalez had been holding back his laughter for minutes. "Oscar-worthy."
Norah looked exceptionally pleased with herself. "I should have gone to acting school. I might have actually won an Oscar by now!"
Seeing her so animated and radiant, Gonzalez fought the urge to pull her into his arms and kiss her breathless.
Norah looked around the restaurant again, letting out a soft sigh. "I really miss working here. When business was booming, everyone was thrilled. When it was slow, we played cards to pass the time. It felt like we didn't have a single care in the world."
