Rhiannon immediately broke into a relieved smile and gently chided her daughter. "Marina, why didn't you say so sooner? We wouldn't have argued over it if we had known."
"I told her to keep it a secret," Carson lied smoothly. "I wanted it to be a surprise for my family. Marina really is too obedient for her own good. To think she'd keep quiet even while being cornered like this."
He gazed down at Marina with deep affection. "Thank you for always putting me first, sweetheart."
Watching him play the role of the hopelessly devoted fiancé, Marina was both awed by his acting skills and fighting the urge to roll her eyes. Yet, she couldn't deny that he was ruthlessly shielding her while subtly dragging her family, leaving them completely speechless.
Aunt Charlotte exchanged a bitter look with her husband. Though entirely unwilling, she had no choice but to concede. "Well, since it's Marina and Mr. Foster's future home, we couldn't possibly ask for it, no matter the reason!"
Phoebe quickly shifted gears, feigning innocent curiosity. "Are you and my sister getting married soon, Mr. Foster? I hadn't heard a word about it!"
The atmosphere in the room tensed again. She was right—they had picked out a house, but no one in the Evert family had been informed of an impending wedding.
Was the Foster family looking down on them, or was Marina completely disrespecting her elders?
Rhiannon and Jude wanted to defend their daughter, but they were caught off guard and could only look at Marina anxiously.
Marina met Phoebe's gaze head-on. "The villa won't be ready for move-in for a few more months. That's plenty of time for you to get your invitation."
Phoebe offered a sickly-sweet smile. "Then let me be the first to congratulate you and Mr. Foster. I'll make sure to focus on my recovery so I can be there to celebrate."
Marina smiled right back. "Oh, don't worry. You'll definitely be there."
Phoebe's expression faltered slightly. She turned a frail smile to her grandfather. "Grandpa, Grandma, let's just leave it at that. I'll be fine!"
Grandpa Evert nodded with a look of immense pride, clearly touched by her maturity.
