Mrs. Foster held her fine bone-china spoon with delicate fingers. She spoke serenely, "What could be so important that you have to interrupt our meal?"

Her airy remark instantly deflated Barton's temper. He looked as if he were the one who had done something wrong. His face flushed a dark red, and his righteous indignation vanished. "Then let Carson finish eating with you. I'll wait for him in the study," he muttered.

He waited a moment after speaking, but when Mrs. Foster offered no response, he had no choice but to awkwardly head to the study alone.

Carson sat perfectly composed, his expression neutral. He hadn't so much as glanced at Barton.

After breakfast, Mrs. Foster said, "I'm going to copy scriptures. Go see your father. Talk things out calmly. He can't do anything to you here."

Carson smiled softly. "Don't worry."

Mrs. Foster headed to the meditation room in the backyard.

Carson was about to head upstairs when Barton came back down. "Your uncles want to see you too," his father said grimly. "I didn't let them come over so they wouldn't disturb your mother's peace. Let's go to the office to talk."

Carson had no objections. He instructed the staff to inform his mother only after she finished her meditation, then left for the company with Barton.

Barton's lineage was the core of the Foster family. Although he was the second son, he held the largest share in the company. Carson's uncles and great-uncles were also shareholders.

Infighting had been non-stop over the years, but Carson's position remained rock solid.

The others resented Carson but were powerless against him. Having finally caught him slipping, they all marched to the office today to interrogate him.

Carson took his time. He finished up some paperwork before heading to the conference room to meet them.

The atmosphere in the room was heavy. The elders sat up straight with dark expressions, looking as if they were attending a funeral.

Carson's handsome face remained impassive. "If you have something to say, gentlemen, please make it quick. I have a meeting to attend."
