Marina looked at him and offered a tight smile. "I just remembered I need to discuss a plot point with Nocturne."
Carson's expression hardened.
Marina pushed him away, hopped off the desk, and grabbed her phone, heading straight for her bedroom.
She paused a few steps away and glanced back over her shoulder, feigning innocent curiosity. "Did you need something tonight?"
Carson stared at her for a long moment before finally speaking. "It's the weekend tomorrow. My mother invited you over for dinner. Are you free?"
Marina thought about it for a second and nodded. "I am."
The corner of Carson's mouth hitched up into a dry smile. "Get some sleep, then. Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
Marina gave a short laugh and walked away.
Carson stepped out onto the balcony. Staring out at the glittering night skyline of J City, his gaze turned dangerously dark.

On the drive over, Marina had Carson pull over so she could buy a bouquet of fresh flowers.
Carson watched her slide back into the passenger seat with her arms full of blooms. His eyes burned with an intense heat. "Beautiful."
Marina grinned proudly. "I picked out the arrangement myself."
Carson gave a faint smile. "I was talking about you."
Marina blinked, looking down at the flowers before shooting him a bright, unabashed smile. "Thanks!"
When they arrived at the Foster family estate, Mrs. Foster happily accepted the bouquet. She and Marina sat in the living room, chatting over tea, while Carson sat beside them, playing the perfect host by refilling their cups and offering fresh fruit.
The kitchen staff looked to Mrs. Foster for approval before nodding in agreement.
Mrs. Foster smiled gently, her voice warm. "My beliefs are meant to discipline myself. They have nothing to do with you young people."
Marina laughed. "I eat so much heavy food on a regular basis. Having a light, plant-based meal every now and then is actually quite nice!"
Carson placed a leafy green onto her plate. "A vegetarian diet is great. It helps purge you of worldly desires."
Marina immediately dropped a slice of winter melon onto his plate. "Then it's perfect for you!"
Mrs. Foster lowered her eyes to hide a soft smile.
Realizing Mrs. Foster had completely misinterpreted their banter, Marina's ears flushed. She shot Carson a subtle glare and quickly ducked her head to eat her greens.
Carson watched the crimson tint spread across the girl's cheeks and couldn't help but grin. He found Marina wildly entertaining whenever she was around his mother.
