There were work-related calls, a few random shopping snaps from Erin, and a message from her mother asking if she was coming home today.

She replied to her mother first, making up an excuse that she'd be back tomorrow instead.

Then she texted Erin back and fired off a few quick replies to resolve some minor work issues.

By the time she finished, she was fully awake and completely starving.

She opened a delivery app to order some food, scrolling on her phone as she walked out of the bedroom. As she opened the door, she froze.

The lights in the living room were on. Carson was just walking out of the study. Seeing her, he arched an eyebrow and smiled faintly. "I thought you weren't here."

Marina walked over to the sofa and sat down, hugging a throw pillow to her chest. She looked entirely drained. "I was asleep. I just woke up."

Carson crossed the room and sat opposite her. He reached out, gently lifting her chin as he studied her face. "You look like you're going through a bad breakup."

Marina met his gaze squarely. "Giving up something you love is practically the same as a breakup."

The corner of Carson's mouth curled into a half-smile. "I warned you to stay away from Nocturne. I told you not to bring your online friendship into the real world, but you didn't listen."

With that, he lifted his hand and affectionately ruffled her hair.

"But you handled yourself well at the banquet the other night."

"Don't be sad. If you want to draw manga, I support you. I can buy Wonder Comics and give it to you. With your talent, creating another masterpiece will be a breeze."

Marina simply stared at him, her voice thick and raspy from sleep. "Carson, you knew Nocturne was Kai from the very beginning, didn't you?"

Carson lowered his hand, casually sitting back against the edge of the coffee table. He didn't say a word.

That silence was all the confirmation Marina needed. A bitter, self-deprecating smile spread across her face. "You knew all along. You were just waiting to watch me make a fool of myself!"
