Marina wanted to tell Miranda that she and Carson would never actually end up together, but looking at the woman's gentle, clear eyes, she couldn't bring herself to say it. She simply couldn't bear to disappoint her.
*
On her way to the dining room, Marina bumped into Shania Dalton.
At the sight of Marina, Shania immediately averted her eyes, pretending she hadn't seen her, and turned her head to chat with someone else.
It seemed that slap had done the trick. At the very least, Shania didn't dare march up to Marina and start throwing a tantrum anymore!
Too scared to provoke Marina, Shania ran off to complain to Carson instead.
"Cousin, why did you bring her here again?"
Carson had taken off his trench coat and was wearing only a light gray sweater. He looked tall, handsome, and impeccably refined. "She's my fiancée," he said coolly. "Why shouldn't she come?"
Shania's face twisted in disgust. "At the banquet last time, she said it herself—she doesn't like you, and she doesn't care what other women you mess around with. If that's how she feels, why are you still treating her so well?"
Carson's expression darkened, his tone turning razor-sharp. "Shania, do you know why Marina slapped you?"
Shania frowned. "Why?"
"Because you're stupid and arrogant!" Carson spat coldly. "Your grades in school were a disaster, and you only managed to graduate because of my dad's connections. Once you started working, you were lazy and had a terrible attitude. You've been fired multiple times, and your track record is so bad that no company will hire you! Now look at Marina. She graduated from a top university with stellar grades, and she's been holding her family's company together entirely on her own. She excels in everything she does!"
"You're both women, but she has real ambition, while you're just a petty, narrow-minded girl who only cares about relationship drama and stirring up trouble. The difference between you two is night and day. That's why, even if she doesn't like me, I'll still choose her as my fiancée. And as for someone like you? Even if you threw yourself at me, I wouldn't give you a second glance."
"Do you understand now?"
Shania stared at Carson in absolute shock. Every word that left his lips felt like a blade, slashing her pride to shreds and leaving her utterly humiliated.
