Mrs. Evert looked at Phoebe with a pleased expression, then turned to Rhiannon with a meaningful tone. "Look at how sensible and understanding our Phoebe is. You need to tell Marina to stop holding onto the past and nitpicking over every little thing. Peace in the family is what matters most."
Rhiannon gave an awkward smile. "I'll talk to Marina!"
Aunt Charlotte smirked triumphantly.
Phoebe stood up. "Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Rhiannon, I'll leave you to your chat. I need to get to work."
Mrs. Evert beamed affectionately, fussing over her. "Go on, drive safe. Make sure you eat a proper lunch and don't overwork yourself!"
Seeing the family's blatant favoritism toward Phoebe twisted a knot of discomfort in Rhiannon's chest, but she managed to force a stiff smile as she watched her niece leave.

That evening, Marina arrived home at seven. As she pushed the door open, she immediately spotted the girl from the elevator that morning sitting on her couch. She was still holding her silver-shaded British Shorthair. "Carson, what do you do for work?"
Carson walked out of the kitchen holding a bottle of water. His gaze immediately found Marina in the entryway, and a soft smile curved his lips. "You're back."
He walked straight over, taking her coat before pressing an intimate kiss to her cheek. "Tired? I got all your favorite food."
Marina's eyes flickered. "What kind of game are you playing?" she murmured.
He rested his hands on her shoulders, attempting to pull her into a hug. "I missed you."
Marina obviously didn't buy a word of it. Tilting her head slightly, her gaze cut past his shoulder toward the living room. "She followed you all the way into our house?"
Lucy Rhodes hurried over, offering Marina a playful, overly sweet greeting. "Hi there!"
Carson released Marina and turned around. "Are you leaving?"
Lucy let out an awkward laugh and offered Marina an explanation. "I forgot to close my door, and Pudding ran downstairs. Luckily, Carson saw him so he didn't get lost. Thank you guys!"
