About fifteen minutes later, Carson returned. He shucked off his coat as he walked through the door, looking slightly rushed.

He told himself to keep it together. He wasn't some clueless teenager experiencing this for the first time, but a rush of nervous anticipation and excitement still gripped him.

He pushed open the door to the guest bedroom, but Marina wasn't in bed. Frowning slightly, he was about to turn around and look for her in the living room when she emerged from the bathroom. She wore a look of apologetic embarrassment. "I'm so sorry. It's my time of the month."

Carson's eyes widened momentarily. He stared at her, feeling a mix of frustration and utter amusement.

Afraid he wouldn't believe her and might think she was playing a joke on him, Marina quickly explained, "I swear, it's a day early. I had no idea."

Carson let out a long breath. Looking at her innocent expression, he couldn't help but laugh in exasperation. He held up the small box in his hand. "Then why did you make me go buy these?"

"Huh?" Marina looked at him in total confusion.

Seeing her genuine bewilderment, that familiar thought surfaced in Carson's mind once again. "You really don't know?"

Marina felt like she might have said the wrong thing and tried to play it cool. "What?"

Carson's eyes flickered with amusement, and he offered a casual smile. "Never mind. Are you feeling any cramps?"

Marina felt a dull ache in her stomach but didn't want to complain. "I'm fine."

Carson nodded. "Get some more sleep. I'll go buy breakfast."

"I'm not going back to sleep," Marina said. "I'm going to get dressed."

Carson pulled her door shut for her and turned to leave.

Stepping out of the apartment again, his mood was vastly different from his frantic run just twenty minutes earlier.

It took an hour for Carson to return. Bringing the chill of the morning air inside with him, he called out to Marina, "Marina, come eat."

Marina walked over. "Where did you go?"

He had been gone so long. Had he run out to find another woman out of frustration?

Carson opened an insulated container and set a bowl of hot soup in front of her. "Women need something nourishing during this time. The Silkie chicken soup from The Emperor's Kitchen is the best. Drink it while it's hot."
