Before the pitch-black ink could even touch his face, Marina paused. Looking at those god-given features, she simply couldn't bring herself to do it.
She walked back to the desk, selected a different brush, and dipped it into some vermilion pigment. Stepping in front of him again, she leaned over slightly, her gaze fixing on his forehead. A few seconds later, the bright red tip of the brush touched his skin.
She carefully painted a five-petaled lotus between his brows. Terrified of waking him, she kept her strokes feather-light, her expression intensely focused. She didn't notice the slight flutter of his eyelashes.
After finishing the lotus, Marina felt it needed a touch of gold dust to make it pop. She turned around to dip her brush again, but when she glanced back, the man's eyes were wide open.
The sunlight streaming through the window illuminated his eyes, making them burn like an alluring fire. Paired with the golden-tinted red lotus, he looked like a captivating, otherworldly creature. Just one look was enough to steal her breath away.
Marina gasped, the words slipping out before she could stop them. "So beautiful."
Carson furrowed his brows slightly, a universe of stars hidden in his deep gaze. He reached out, grabbed her hand, and pulled her right into his lap. He smiled—a lazy, intoxicating grin.
"What did you draw on me?"
Marina sat securely on his lap, a mysterious smile playing on her lips. "I drew a turtle!"
Carson raised an eyebrow. "Then I'll draw one on you, too."
Marina was entirely fearless. "Do you even know how to draw?"
A sly glint flickered in Carson's brilliant eyes. "Drawing it myself is too much effort. I have a better way."
Without warning, he cupped the back of her head and pressed his forehead firmly against hers.
Their noses bumped, their breaths mingled. With their faces merely inches apart, they stared into each other's eyes, seeing their own reflections mirrored back at them.
His eyes were pitch-black, like a boundless ocean, holding a deep, lingering tenderness—and holding her.
