Dusk had settled over the estate, casting a hazy twilight across the courtyard. Carson stared down at her, his brows knit tightly together, his eyes dark with turmoil. "What happened? We were perfectly fine. Why the sudden breakup?"
Marina looked at him with icy calm. "We always had an arrangement. We could end it whenever we wanted. I want to end it now."
Carson's eyes were like a frozen lake, harboring a dangerous, suppressed fury. "After everything, you still think this is just an arrangement?"
Marina scoffed. "What else would it be? Did I ever agree to actually date you?"
Carson's heart plummeted. A flash of profound pain crossed his face. He nodded slowly. "Fine. We can break up. But I need to know why."
Before he left for H City, they had been deeply in love. The moment he returned, everything had dropped below freezing.
It had only been two days. He had to know what had caused this.
Marina lowered her gaze, radiating pure apathy. "There's no reason. I just realized this arrangement is a waste of both our time. It's pointless."
A spark of desperate hope flared in Carson's eyes. "We aren't wasting time. We can get married. We can get married right now."
Marina let out a harsh, mocking laugh. She tilted her head up, meeting his desperate gaze head-on. "Carson, do I have to spell it out for you? I don't want to marry you. That's why I don't want to waste another second on you. We're over. Keep whatever dignity you have left and honor our original agreement."
The light in Carson's eyes died completely. He stared at her in utter disbelief, his expression lost. "I don't understand. I really don't understand."
Even if they hadn't explicitly defined their relationship, they had spent the last few weeks acting like two people madly in love. He thought some things didn't need to be said out loud.
He had already started quietly planning their wedding for early next year.
But in the blink of an eye, it was all gone. She spoke with such chilling detachment, making it seem like their intimacy and reliance on one another had been a complete figment of his imagination.
He stared at her, his voice steeped in agony. "Are you really going to stand there and tell me you never loved me at all?"
The encroaching night mist thickened, forming an invisible wall between them. It blurred the lines of Marina's face, making her look even more ruthlessly beautiful.
"Never," she stated flatly. "You're no different from Freddy. You think I'd be stupid enough to fall into the same trap twice?"
