Seeing how upset she was, Summer wrapped an arm around her shoulder. "Once everyone has had some time to cool off, I'll ask Trixie out and we can talk face-to-face. Maybe if we clear up the misunderstanding, things can go back to how they were."
Marina slowly shook her head. "It's not a misunderstanding. I just covered my own eyes and pretended the problem had disappeared. It wasn't until I saw it for myself that I finally woke up."
Her anger was perhaps just frustration at her own foolishness.
Summer frowned, looking at her in confusion. "What do you mean? I don't follow."
She reached out and felt Marina's forehead. "Are you drunk?"
Marina's gaze was unfocused as she rested her head on the bar counter. Her slender shoulders looked so fragile, a stark contrast to her usual strong, resilient demeanor.
When she returned home that night, Rhiannon was waiting for her in the living room. "Have you been drinking?" she asked, frowning.
Marina picked up a glass of water and downed it in one go. "Not much."
Rhiannon's voice grew heavy. "Your father said the company's situation is looking very grim. Do you want to... go ask Carson for help? Even if the engagement is off, he doesn't have to drive you into the ground. Or I could go talk to him!"
"No!" Marina refused outright. "Don't go begging him."
Rhiannon looked torn. "Then what are we going to do?"
She could tell Marina had been in a terrible mood these past few days, completely overwhelmed by the company's crisis. She often stayed up half the night. How long could she keep pushing herself like this?
Marina sat on the sofa and said quietly, "If the company goes under, will you and Dad blame me?"
Rhiannon paused, then slowly shook her head. "Your father said the other day that the most important thing is for our family to be healthy and happy. That's why he didn't stop you from breaking off the engagement. We respect your decision. If the company really goes bankrupt because of this, I don't think he'll blame you, and neither will I."
A lump formed in Marina's throat. She tilted her head and gently rested it on Rhiannon's shoulder. "I've saved up a substantial nest egg for you and Dad, enough for you to enjoy your retirement. If the company goes under, I think I'll move to B City to be with Grandpa Wallace. I might just build my career there."
After a moment of shock, Rhiannon quickly understood. "Alright. I wasn't able to stay by my father's side to take care of him, so it would be nice for you to go. He adores you anyway."
