Phoebe knew Kai was unwilling, and though her heart sank, she kept a soft smile on her face, even leaning slightly closer to him.

Next came the toasts from the elders. Grandpa Foster presented Phoebe with an antique jade bracelet, wishing the couple a lifetime of love and happiness.

Grandpa Evert also presented Kai with an expensive gift and offered some standard words of blessing.

"You've never been one to drag things out, Carson. Isn't it better to just make a clean break?" Marina replied coolly.

Carson's handsome face tightened. "Today is Kai and Phoebe's big day. Announcing a broken engagement now would just sour the mood. We'll handle our business another day!"

He paused, then added pointedly, "Don't worry, Ms. Evert. No one is going to pester you!"

The implication was clear: she wasn't irreplaceable, and she shouldn't flatter herself.

Marina's eyes flickered, and she lowered her lashes, saying nothing more.

Rhiannon quickly chimed in. "Carson is right. It's bad luck to announce a split on the day of Phoebe's engagement. Let's do it another time."
