The morning mist seemed to grow thicker, rendering the rising sun pale and weak. The windless cold was just as bone-piercing.
The moisture gathered on Marina's eyelashes sparkled like unshed tears. She said flatly, "Go home. Find some time to officially call off the engagement with the elders. I've made peace with it and I don't hate you anymore. If you stop resenting me too, we can still exchange civil greetings when we cross paths."
With that, Marina turned and began walking down the road.
"Marina!" Carson yelled out, his voice cracking. "You love me, don't you? Otherwise you wouldn't care this much, you wouldn't be this hurt!"
Marina's steps faltered. She didn't speak or look back, just kept walking.
"I wasn't with her that night," Carson said quietly.
Marina had already walked too far away to tell if she heard him.

Carson returned to The Riverside Apartments once again. Sitting on the sofa, he could almost perfectly envision the crushing disappointment and grief she must have felt coming back here that night.
What state of mind must she have been in when she packed her things? It took an immense amount of absolute despair for her to leave without a single word of explanation.
She was so utterly let down that she deemed even a confrontation beneath her!
He had no right to explain himself. A mistake was a mistake.
She was sad and she cared because she fell in love with him. Was he supposed to blame her for loving him?
Carson's mind was a tangled mess. He felt like a trapped beast thrashing wildly to find an exit, only to discover the glass was completely sealed shut!
He lit a cigarette. The image of Marina smoking in tears at Midnight Bar flashed in his mind again, and every drag of smoke he inhaled felt like a knife dragging through his lungs.
After a long time, the cigarette burned down. He walked into the guest bedroom and collapsed onto the bed, his head spinning heavily.
He had genuinely caught a cold. Staying outside all night in the freezing temperatures without sleep had drained him completely. The moment he laid down, he didn't want to open his eyes again.
Rolling onto his side, his arm slid under the pillow and brushed against something.
