Carson glanced back, his dark eyes intense and unyielding. "Just let me hold it. I promise I won't let you fall this time!"
Marina's face was pale from the biting cold, her eyelashes dusted with delicate snowflakes. She looked up at him, her eyes wide and damp, before ruthlessly ripping her hand from his grip. She let out a mocking scoff. "You clearly don't know how a snowball fight works. If we run around holding hands, we're just making ourselves a bigger target."
Carson wasn't deterred. He matched her pace, sticking to her like glue. He absorbed incoming hits for her, packed fresh snowballs and handed them over, his eyes never leaving her face. The entire time, a devastating smile played on his lips.
"Carson! You didn't tell me there was a war going on down here!"
George came sprinting out to join the chaos. The man was far too hyped up and completely unable to distinguish friend from foe. He started hurling snowballs wildly in every direction, which inevitably resulted in everyone immediately turning on him. Within seconds, he was shrieking, clutching his head, and running for his life.
Watching George's towering, lanky frame leaping and scrambling through the snowbanks, Marina doubled over, laughing until her stomach hurt. When she first met him, George had been this elegant, sophisticated man in a crisp white shirt playing classical piano. Watching him get pelted by children was the greatest juxtaposition of her life!
"Carson! Why is everyone targeting me?! Save me!"
George made a desperate dive toward where Carson and Marina were standing.
Carson immediately grabbed Marina's arm and dragged her in the opposite direction. "You're on your own! Don't bring that crossfire over here!"
Marina glanced back at George, fully intending to go help the poor man, but the grip on her wrist suddenly tightened. The next second, Carson hauled her flush against his chest.
Marina's eyes went wide just as a massive snowball slammed brutally into the middle of Carson's back.
She immediately tried to push away, but his arms locked around her like a vice. "Don't move. It hurts!"
Marina rolled her eyes. How badly could a snowball possibly hurt?
"It really hurts," he whispered, burying his face into the crook of her neck, his voice dropping to a raspy, agonizing murmur. "It hurts so much I can't sleep at night. It feels like my heart has been completely hollowed out. I don't know what to do."
Marina froze.
"Temptress, tell me... what am I supposed to do?" His tone was practically begging as he gently brushed his forehead against her temple.
"I don't know," Marina choked out, her voice tight. She tilted her head up to the sky, letting the falling snow land in her eyes and melt away in silent streaks.
Noticing that Carson wasn't moving or fighting back, the kid who had hit him launched two more snowballs in their direction.
Marina snapped out of her daze. She angrily shoved Carson away, scooped up a handful of snow, and sprinted fiercely after the boy who dared to attack them.
