Chapter 14
He exaggerated dramatically.
“Wait, are you serious? You’re not trying to eat for free, are you?” His wolf’s amusement was thinly veiled. The idea of the esteemed daughter of the Miller family being without resources was almost comical.
But I truly was.
I was in my second year of apprenticeship under the Pack Elder, managing many tasks for my brothers.
I had little time for personal gain, and my allowance was provided by Caleb.
After repeatedly “offending” Emily with my clumsy attempts at pack etiquette, my personal resources had dwindled.
If the Miller longhouse hadn’t provided food and shelter, I might have starved in the wilds.
My wolf shivered at the thought.
“I saved you, and now you want me to cover the Pack Healer’s fees?” he asked, his eyes suggesting I was attempting to scam him.
His wolf’s skepticism was undeniable.
I felt a little embarrassed.
“How about I share my spirit–link with you, and I’ll repay you once I have some resources…”
Just as we exchanged spirit–links, the den flap burst open violently.
Jared stood there, his wolf bristling, his eyes blazing.
“Isabella, Emily was right, you really are with this scoundrel, Grayson!” His scent, sharp with anger and accusation, filled the den.
My expression turned icy.
My wolf snarled, instinctively reacting to his accusation.

“She’s in the Pack Healer’s den, not a hotel. What’s with that tone? Are you accusing us of adultery?” Grayson said coolly, turning back to his comm–stone, his wolf unimpressed.
Jared snapped back, “This is none of your business! I’m talking to my sister!” His wolf snarled, its frustration evident.
“If
you
hadn’t mentioned she’s your sister, I’d have thought you two were bitter rivals.
She had a moon–fever and was cast out of her own home, and you come in here not even checking on her well–being, but instead blaming her for being with her savior?” Grayson’s voice was laced with barely–concealed scorn, his wolf radiating confidence. Jared’s temples throbbed at Grayson’s words.
Any guilt he felt quickly vanished, replaced by wounded pride.
“She didn’t say anything! And she ran off on her own!” Jared then turned to me.
“Isabella, can’t you be more considerate like Emily? Can’t you simply communicate when you’re ill? You’re a grown wolf! Can’t you find sustenance when you’re unwell? You had to run out and make a fool of us!” His eyes were filled with disdain for how I embarrassed
him.

I said coldly, “I was resting at home. It was you who dragged me from my bed. I had a moon–fever, and you didn’t notice a thing.” My wolf bristled at his accusations.
Jared felt a pang of guilt.
He had noticed that I was slightly warm, but he’d just assumed I was overheated from sleeping!
His wolf felt a prickle of shame.
He glanced at Grayson, his pride struggling with his guilt.
Jared’s pride was paramount.
He considered me disrespectful and retorted, “I’m not that observant. Why do you have a mouth if you don’t use it?” His wolf’s
arrogance was transparent.
I smiled sarcastically.
“You’re not observant? Yet when Emily frowns, you know she finds the healing herbs bitter, and you’re right there with soothing
honey!”
