Chapter 183
I sneered, my tone devoid of warmth. He broke the ancient Wolf Pact, I cannot intervene.
My wolf felt a cold satisfaction at my own dispassion.
Jared’s face drained of color. “Isabella, if you were to issue a letter of forgiveness…”
His hope was a fragile thing.
Mr. Miller,” I said slowly, my words precise and sharp.
“Why on earth would I forgive someone who attempted to claim me as his own and threatened my pack?”
My wolf bristled at the memory of his arrogance and threat.
He opened his mouth, but the words caught in his throat, rendered useless.
My alpha dominance was undeniable.
“He must face the consequences of his actions,” I stated, my voice unwavering.
My wolf growled silently, a low rumble of righteous fury.
With that, I started the engine of my wolf–drawn carriage, leaving him standing alone, defeated. The wind howled, the scent of fallen leaves sharp in the air, like forgotten memories.
From outside the Smith family longhouse, Jared watched my carriage disappear. A servant approached, carrying a warming pouch.“Sir, this is Second Master’s midday meal. Shall we deliver it…”
Jared accepted the pouch. Taking a deep breath, he composed himself before climbing into his own carriage. He had to go to the Healing Den; Alexander and Emily were under confinement; Caleb would be worried if he didn’t visit.
Sunlight illuminated Caleb’s pale face in the Healing Den.
He lay still, staring at the roof beams, lost in thought.
Jared entered, placing the warming pouch on the bedside table, forcing a smile. “Caleb, I brought your favorite spiced rabbit.”
Caleb looked at him.“Where are Emily and Alexander? Why aren’t they here?”
His voice was strained, his wolf sensing something was amiss.
Jared’s face tightened. He stammered, “They… they’re occupied…”
“Occupied?” Caleb frowned.“Are they more occupied than you?” Jared’s participation in the upcoming Howl was imminent, yet he was here; Emily and Alexander were nowhere to be found.
Jared lowered his head.“Alexander… he’s assisting Emily in preparations for the Silvermoon Fashion Gathering…”
He lied, his wolf wincing at the deception.
Caleb, gentler and more patient than their elder brother Andrew, who harbored an unhealthy obsession with besting Grayson, was the brother they all loved most, and the one they feared the most when they transgressed.
Caleb’s gaze was unwavering, his pressure intense. “They… they’re dealing with a… a slight… complication.”
“What complication?” Caleb pressed, his wolf sensing the truth behind the evasiveness.
After a tense pause, Jared revealed everything–Alexander’s attempted abduction and Emily’s embezzlement from the Pack Treasury.
Caleb was stunned. He couldn’t believe Emily and Alexander were capable of such actions. He had perceived Emily as gentle and kind; while he knew Alexander often used dubious tactics, this was beyond his comprehension.
“How dare Alexander! He…” Caleb, overwhelmed by emotion, clutched his chest, gasping for air. His wolf reacted to the betrayal with shock and pain.
Jared was startled; he’d already minimized their actions, and yet, it still deeply affected Caleb.
His own wolf felt the weight of his brothers‘ actions.
