Chapter 50
She had taken my place; being able to repair the Rune–stone meant she had solidified her position in the pack! How could I be completely unfazed? My wolf felt a flicker of resentment, a low growl rumbling in my chest.
She thinks she’s won.”
I must be pretending!
“Isabella, don’t be like this,” Emily softened her tone.
I know you’re upset.
If you want to return to the Miller pack, I can help you.”
I closed my book, looking at her.
“What would I go back for? To take your challenges?”
My wolf bared its teeth, a silent snarl directed at her.
The library was quiet; and even though my voice wasn’t loud, it rang clear in that moment.
The tension was thick enough to cut with a silver knife.
Her expression changed; she glanced around, noticing many were paying attention to her.
She silently gritted her teeth, vowing never to come to the library to find me again!
Her wolf was humiliated.
“No, I genuinely want to help you.
It’s not good for a she–wolf to live alone with a strange he–wolf.”
The way she said it made it sound like I was living recklessly.
My wolf bristled at her implication.
“By your logic, living with five strange he–wolves is also bad; yet you did it.
I’m better; I’m staying with a neighbor, not a stranger.
Why are you so hypocritical?”
Noticing the odd looks from those around her, Emily panicked and defended herself, “I’m not! Isabella, I’m doing this for your own good…”
I scoffed at her, “Then tell me, what’s the benefit of me going back?”
Emily opened her mouth, stammering a few times before managing to say, “Home is better…”
“Home? You mean that den filled with your things, like a storage room?”
“Eating someone’s food, taking their money…”

“I ate the Miller pack’s food, and I’m still short.
I even got my allowance cut, what’s the difference?”
“Then…”
“I dress worse than you, the adopted she–wolf; everyone’s probably forgotten I’m the daughter of the Miller family and think I’m a charity case.”
I took a deep breath, suppressing my emotions.
My wolf, however, was still restless.
“Why is it good to go back?”
