She took a step forward and leaned close to Grace’s ear, speaking in a voice only the two of them could hear.
“Grace, do you really think my cousin loves you?”
“He’s just looking for something new.”
“Once he gets tired of your scarred body, what do you think will happen to you?”
“If I were you, I’d have found a place to smash my head against a wall long ago. Better than embarrassing yourself in public…”
Crack!
A crisp slap echoed, cutting off Celia’s tirade.
The world fell silent.
Celia clutched her face, her eyes wide with disbelief.
The force of the blow had cracked the foundation on her cheek.
The person who had struck her was not Damien.
It was Grace.
Her hand was still trembling, her palm stinging with a fiery pain.
But her gaze was firmer than it had ever been.
“Watch your mouth.”
Grace’s voice was quiet, but every word was crystal clear.
“I am Damien’s lawfully wedded wife, not some tramp.”
“And another thing, my leg was injured saving someone’s life. It’s not something to be ashamed of.”
“But you, Miss Brooks…”
Grace let out a cold laugh.
“Throwing your weight around because of some distant family connection.”
“Has the Clarke family ever even acknowledged you as a relative?”
“You—!”
Celia trembled with rage, raising her hand to strike back.
“How dare you hit me? I’ll tear your face apart!”
However, her hand was intercepted mid-air.
Damien grabbed her arm and forcefully threw it aside.
Celia stumbled back several steps, her high heel twisted, and she fell to the ground in a heap.
“Ah!”
Celia cried out.
Damien looked down at her, his eyes devoid of any warmth.
“Felix.”
They left Celia sitting on the ground, facing a sea of flashing cameras, her makeup ruined by her tears.
Damien helped Grace into the car, and they set off on the highway toward Briarwick Hollow.
The atmosphere in the car was heavy.
Grace leaned against Damien’s chest, silent.
That slap had used up all her courage.
Now that the adrenaline was fading, a tide of fear and insecurity washed over her.
“Damien…”
“I’m here.”
Damien took her hand and brought it to his lips for a kiss.
“Did I cause trouble for you? Those reporters are definitely going to write all sorts of things.”
“Then let them write,” Damien interrupted her.
“I’d like to see which media outlet dares to publish it.”
“Grace, remember this. You are my wife.”
“In this world, you can hit anyone, you can yell at anyone.”
“If anything happens, I’ll be there to back you up.”
“Even if you set the world on fire, I’d be there to put it out for you.”
