Dorian grabbed his head in agony, his fingers digging into his hair.
"Grace, don't ask… please, just don't ask…"
"I'm doing this for your own good! Knowing even a little more could mean utter ruin for you!"
"For my own good?"
Grace laughed as if she'd heard the funniest joke in the world, laughed until tears welled in her eyes.
"There's that phrase again. Dorian, don't you think those words are cheap?"
"When Alistair Hart sent me to be married off to Ethan Ward, he said it was for my own good."
"Later, when you all forced me to donate my bone marrow to that bitch Lilian Hart to save the Hart family’s precious image, you told me it was for my own good."
"And now, you're hiding the truth about my mother being spied on and murdered, and it's still for my own good?"
She suddenly slammed her hand on the desk, her voice rising sharply.
"Your 'good' is a death sentence for me!"
Dorian flinched, his eyes turning red.
"No! This time it's really different!"
He shouted incoherently, "The night before Dad died, he clutched my hand, reduced to a shaking, pathetic mess. Do you know what he said?"
"He said spying on Mom was never his idea! Someone ordered him to do it!"
"The Shepherd promised that if Dad reported on Mom's health data and whereabouts on schedule, they would provide a continuous stream of funding to the Hart Group. The family was about to go bankrupt back then! That money saved us!"
"Dad said he didn't kill Mom! He didn't have the guts to kill anyone! It was 'The Shepherd's' people who did it!"
Grace's heart pounded in her chest.
Just as she thought.
There was someone else pulling the strings.
"Who is 'The Shepherd'?" she pressed.
"I said, get up!" Grace snapped.
Dorian shakily got to his feet.
"You say there's no point?"
Grace pointed at her heart. "That was our mother! The mother who carried us for nine months and went through hell to give birth to us! She was treated like a lab rat in that sunless attic, spied on, tortured, and then brutally murdered!"
"And you have the nerve to tell me there's no point in seeking the truth?"
"You're afraid to die. I'm not."
"And don't use my child as an excuse. If my child ever learns that their grandmother was murdered and their mother was a coward who did nothing, they would be ashamed of me!"
Grace took a deep breath, calming her turbulent emotions.
"Since you're so scared, then as of today, this has nothing to do with you. I'll investigate it myself."
With that, she turned to leave.
