Grace glanced in the rearview mirror and saw Ivy staring out the window.
She was worried but didn't know what to say.
The rest of the drive passed in silence, and they soon arrived at the City Police Headquarters.
The Winter Solstice had just ended, so the station was bustling with people.
"Let's go sit over there for a bit."
Grace pointed to a row of chairs in the corner.
Ivy said nothing and walked over to sit down.
They waited for two hours.
"Grace, are you cold?" Ivy asked, rubbing her arms.
Grace shook her head. "I'm not."
Footsteps approached, and they both looked up at the same time.
"Grace! Miss Dawson!"
It was Elliot.
He looked exhausted, with huge dark circles under his eyes, clearly having worked for days without sleep.
Ivy stood up and looked behind him but didn't see the person she was expecting.
"Where's Lucian Chow?"
Elliot froze for a second, then instinctively glanced at Grace.
"Uh... Miss Dawson, I'm so sorry."
Elliot explained awkwardly, "Because this case is international, involves a large sum of money, and he was also involved in illegal gambling and smuggling abroad, the High Commission took over the case directly. They did the handover at the airport, and their transport vehicle took him away. He never came here."
He wasn't here?
Ivy's expression immediately fell.
"Oh, I see..."
She slumped back into her chair.
"Um... Grace, since you didn't get to see him, you two should probably head back. Once the High Commission is done with the interrogation and they need the victim for an identification, I'll give you a call."
Elliot stammered through his words, his gaze darting around, unable to meet Ivy's eyes.
Grace stood to the side, watching the scene, and suddenly felt a weight lift from her chest.
She noticed Elliot's discomfort, but she also saw the gratitude in Ivy's eyes.
Perhaps, after one flower wilts, another can finally bloom.
On the way back, the atmosphere was much lighter than it had been on the way there.
"Ivy," Grace began tentatively, "are you disappointed you didn't get to see him? If you still want to, I can have Damien talk to the High Commission..."
Although Damien tried to avoid interfering in official matters now, he would make an exception for Ivy.
"There's no need."
Ivy spoke softly. "Grace, you know what? Back at the station, when I heard Mr. Ashcombe say his leg was broken and that he'd been taken away, I suddenly felt... it didn't matter that much anymore."
Ivy turned to look at Grace and smiled.
