Five Years Wasted Now They Beg Her Back novel Chapter 516

Grace had thought that telling her grandfather the news of her grandmother's death might provoke a flicker of remorse, even a tiny bit of emotion.

But she was wrong.

Some people were rotten to the core.

Whether it was the well-dressed beasts of the Hart family or the ignorant, vicious old man in here, they were all the same.

They didn't deserve forgiveness.

"Let's go."

Grace turned around. "Since he doesn't want to see me, then we never have to see him again."

Grace was exceptionally busy that day.

Too busy to have time for grief.

She had to choose an urn, a burial plot, and arrange the memorial service.

She personally attended to every detail, striving for perfection.

She was calm, handling matters with clear-headed efficiency, even managing a smile as she received guests who came to pay their respects.

Only Damien knew she was running on fumes.

She was forcing herself to be busy, forcing herself not to confront her feelings.

It wasn't until the evening of the next day.

Grace was holding a vigil for her grandmother at the memorial when her phone suddenly rang.

It was an unfamiliar landline number.

She answered the call.

"Hello?"

"Is this Miss Grace?"

The voice on the other end belonged to the prison guard from the day before.

"It is."

"Uh... this is Wes from the prison. I'm calling to inform you..."

The guard paused, trying to find the right words, but still struggled when he spoke again. "The... the inmate... he... committed suicide this afternoon."

Grace thought she must have misheard.

"What did you say?"

"He committed suicide."

The guard's voice trembled. "It happened just now, during yard time. He had secretly sharpened a plastic spoon from a meal... and when no one was looking, he stabbed himself directly in the carotid artery..."

Her grandmother's funeral was held on the third day.

It rained heavily that day.

Besides Ivy, Damien, and a few of her employees, no one else was there.

Ivy complained about Cassian Hart's cold indifference, unaware that he had spent the entire afternoon tucked away in a quiet corner of a bookstore, his face buried in his hands as he wept in silence.

Dorian Hart, however, had rushed back from Verstein immediately.

But he didn't go to see Grace. He simply gave a deep bow at the funeral and left.

"Let us bow our heads—"

The officiant's voice sounded particularly sorrowful in the rain.

Grace stood silently before the tombstone, dressed in black with a white flower pinned to her chest.

Damien held a black umbrella over her, his own body half-exposed to the rain as he tilted the umbrella entirely over Grace's head.

"The service is concluded."

With that final announcement, her grandmother became a part of the earth, laid to rest forever.

The guests gradually dispersed.

Ivy walked over and hugged Grace.
