And just like that, the two of them boarded the flight to Stockholm.
Once the plane broke through the stratosphere, the ride smoothed out.
The cabin was quiet.
Grace sat in the window seat, staring blankly at the rolling sea of clouds outside.
"Drink some water." Damien handed her a cup of warm water. "You need to stay hydrated."
Grace shook her head slightly.
"I can't stomach it."
"Drink it anyway."
Damien's expression darkened. "Are you planning to pass out the second we step off this plane so I have to carry you while I search for Gianna? Or do you want to be completely out of it when we actually find her?"
His words were harsh, but effective.
Grace bit her lip, took the cup, and forced the water down her throat.
"Get some sleep."
Damien took the empty cup and asked the flight attendant for a light blanket to drape over her. "We have ten hours left. Get some real rest."
Grace didn't put up a fight. She leaned her head against his shoulder.
"Damien."
She spoke softly, her eyes closed.
"Hmm?"
"Do you regret it?"
"Regret what?"
"Regret meeting me. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't be dragged into this mess, and you wouldn't be risking your life running around like this."
Damien's hand paused.
"Grace, do you think I'm just a glutton for punishment?"
He didn't answer her directly, asking instead in a low voice, "Are you wondering why I'm so devoted to you without holding anything back?"
Grace remained silent, her eyelashes fluttering against her cheeks.
Damien continued speaking, almost to himself. "Do you know that my time at St. Clarion Academy was the darkest period of my life? Back then, everyone wanted to stay as far away from me as possible. Everyone wanted to step on me."
"Only you." He looked down at her. "Only you asked if I was hungry. Only you didn't care who I was. You were terrified, but you still stood in front of me and chased all those bullies away."
