"Grace Hart, pull yourself together!"
He hissed through clenched teeth into her ear, "Can't you use your head for once? It's a miracle you've survived this long."
Grace clutched his sleeve, her lips trembling. "Damien, I..."
Seeing her looking so entirely defeated, Damien felt a tiny, barely noticeable, incredibly slight twinge of regret for snapping at her.
He took a deep breath, forcing down his rising irritation.
He turned his head to look at the old woman, who was unbothered, rinsing the teacups.
"Ma'am, let's skip the games."
Damien got straight to the point. "The taxi parked near here, and we've seen the surveillance footage. The fact that you opened the door and let us in proves you know exactly who we're looking for."
As he spoke, he pulled a checkbook from his jacket, slapped a blank check onto the coffee table.
"If it's money you want, write down any number you like."
"But if you're working for someone else," Damien's gaze turned predatory, his voice dropping to a freezing pitch. "Let me warn you. The Clarke family might not run Europe, but I am perfectly willing to burn everything I own to the ground to find my daughter."
The old woman acted as if she hadn't heard the deadly threat. She calmly lifted the teapot and poured the brew into two delicate porcelain cups.
She pushed the cups toward them, her tone utterly flat. "At my age, money means absolutely nothing. As for threats..."
She chuckled, glancing up at Damien. "If I was afraid to die, I wouldn't be living out here."
She wasn't taking the carrot or the stick.
Damien's brow furrowed into a tight knot.
The minutes ticked by.
The wall clock chimed with a steady tick, tock, leaving Grace sitting on pins and needles.
Several times, she nearly jumped up to raid the back rooms, only to be stopped by Damien's warning glare.
Damien looked composed, but his palms were growing clammy too.
It was a rare sign of his severe anxiety.
