Seeing the old woman's soft smile, Damien's suspicions were confirmed.
He probed gently, "What is your relationship with Lauren Hawke?"
Mrs. Hawke remained silent.
To Damien, her silence was as good as an admission.
He swallowed hard and turned to look at Grace.
Grace stared back at him, bewildered.
She had probably already guessed the truth, but simply refused to accept it.
Damien sighed, turned back, and voiced his theory. "Are you Fiona Hawke?"
The moment that name hung in the air, Grace felt her mind short-circuit.
"What... what are you talking about?" Grace stood up abruptly. "Damien, why would you ask that?"
Mrs. Hawke still didn't answer.
She rose slowly, her gaze drifting toward the bright sunlight streaming through the window, before walking over to the piano. She picked up the framed photograph and brought it back.
It was an old, faded black-and-white picture.
The image captured a young woman.
She was dressed in an elegant vintage dress, her hair styled in soft waves, and a gentle, captivating smile graced her lips.
Nestled in her arms was a toddler, barely over a year old.
"Is... is that..."
Staring at the photo, tears welled up in Grace's eyes and spilled down her cheeks.
"This little girl is Lauren."
As the old woman spoke, a mix of profound tenderness and sorrow filled her gaze.
She looked at Grace and reached out, as if to cup her cheek, but hesitated. Instead, her hand rested lightly on Grace's hair.
"Grace, I am your maternal grandmother. You've... suffered so much all these years."
Grace's head was spinning.
Her grandmother?
She thought back to a year ago, when Melissa had first reunited with her and revealed the truth about Lauren's origins.
