But Grace was calm.
She opened the presentation she had prepared and began to report on her week’s work with clear logic.
Not only had she re-archived all the data, but she had also used her own proprietary algorithm to perform preliminary screening and modeling.
Before she could finish, Dr. Lowell slammed his hand on the table.
“Utter nonsense!”
He stood up, pointing at Grace, and shouted, “You’re a newcomer! What right do you have to question the research direction of our entire team?”
“Your data model, I bet you just made it all up!”
He acted as if he had caught her red-handed, his eyes turning exceptionally sharp.
“Grace, is your data… really reliable?”
He threw out the question slowly, then gave a nod to the technician.
The next second, the image on the projection screen switched.
In its place was an enlarged screenshot of a news webpage.
The headline was blatant: [OrionVale Institute’s Rising Star Grace Fired for Academic Fraud!]
The entire conference room erupted.
Everyone’s gaze snapped to Grace.
So that was it.
No wonder a rookie was so arrogant. She was a repeat offender with a history!
A triumphant smirk played on Dr. Lowell’s lips as he looked at Grace.
This was the effect he wanted.
He wanted everyone to see what kind of person this woman who got in through connections really was.
“A researcher whose academic integrity is questionable,” his voice, sharp and biting, was crystal clear in the quiet room. “The data you produce—how do you expect us to believe it?”
“Grace, did you think the people at Arclight are as easy to fool as your old colleagues?”
Grace looked around the room.
The suffocating feeling of being isolated by the entire world washed over her again.
She drank cup after cup of coffee until her eyes were bloodshot.
Finally, at four o’clock the next morning.
She found it—the fatal flaw that everyone else had overlooked.
The core module that Dr. Lowell and his team were responsible for had used an incorrect reference frame during the protein crystal structure analysis.
The error was minuscule, almost impossible to detect in the early data.
But once the project entered the drug synthesis stage, this tiny mistake would be magnified exponentially.
It would ultimately cause the entire project to collapse.
All the investment, everyone’s hard work, would be for nothing.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Grace began correcting the data, building a new model, and deducing new molecular structures.
Outside the window, the sky slowly began to lighten.
As the first rays of dawn streamed through the blinds and fell upon her face, a new, perfect experimental plan was finally generated on her computer.
