Don’t Hold Onto the Past
Two maids entered Abril’s room. She didn’t recognize either of them and wondered if they were new or if they had been assigned to another part of the palace, which is why she had never seen them before. One of them spoke, pulling her out of her thoughts, and asked, “Which would Your Majesty like to do? Would you like to eat first or take a bath?”
Abril had perspired a lot and hadn’t been able to bathe, so she ordered them to prepare the bath first. They attended to her with great care. They praised her beauty and the softness of her skin while applying scented oils and massaging her body. Abril found it strange to be treated this way, as the maids in that palace had never been kind to her. In fact, she remembered when the maids would constantly go to her small house in the farthest corner of the palace, and how she would throw dirty water at them to drive them away because she refused to return to the main palace, where she had only been a prisoner.
Back then, the maids would harass her and be rude to her, but that seemed to have changed. She wondered if all those maids had been replaced, and selfishly, she hoped they had.
After they finished changing her clothes and combing her hair, Abril asked one of the maids, “Do any of you know where the little fox I have as a pet is?”
“Yes, Your Majesty, the little fox has been cared for by us, although I must say it’s not so little anymore. Would you like me to bring it?”
“Yes, please.”
The maids left, and shortly after, one returned with dinner and the other with the fox in her arms. Upon seeing her, the fox jumped from the maid’s arms and went straight to Abril. He had grown a lot since the last time she had seen him, and his fur was even fluffier.
“Koda, did you miss me?” Abril asked while hugging him, enjoying the softness of his fur. One of the maids responded, “I think he missed you a lot, Your Majesty. It seemed like he was looking for you all the time.”
“Thank you very much for taking care of him; it’s clear you’ve treated him well.”
“He is Your Majesty’s precious pet; we had to do it.”
“Even so, thank you.”
When the table was set, one of the maids said, “Your Majesty, dinner is served.”
Abril placed Koda on the floor and walked over to the table. The dinner was a soup that smelled wonderful, making her mouth water. While eating, one of the maids said, “We

Abril’s stomach was a bit upset from the journey, and although she was hungry, eating something heavy wouldn’t have suited her well, so she told them it was fine. After finishing the soup, she ate the dessert, which was something fresh and sweet with a lemon flavor, making her feel good. Then she ate a few grapes and asked for the tray to be removed, feeling satisfied. She took Koda back into her arms and asked, “Do you know if Alessandro has already had dinner?”
“No, Your Majesty, the king is still meeting with the leader of the Wizard’s Tower. Do you need anything else?”
“No, that’s all, you may leave.”
Abril was tired; she just wanted to sleep, but she wanted to wait for Alessandro. She didn’t want to go to sleep without seeing him because the next day he would likely get up early, and she wouldn’t see him until nightfall. She went out to the balcony to clear her mind. A soft and fresh breeze ruffled her hair. She stared into the distance, feeling like the days she had spent
elsewhere seemed distant.
Alessandro entered the room, and Abril was so absorbed in her thoughts that she didn’t feel him arrive until he wrapped his arms around her and said, “The journey has been tiring; why aren’t you resting?”
“I was waiting for you; I didn’t want to go to sleep without seeing you first.”
Alessandro noticed that Abril had a ball of fur in her arms, and since he was behind her, he didn’t know what it was, so he asked, “What do you have in your arms?“Abril turned around to show him what it was and said.
“It’s Koda.”
“This furball is still alive.”
“The maids have taken good care of him.”
“Speaking of the maids, has any of them been rude to you?”
“No, they have been very kind.”
“If any of them is rude to you, tell me, I won’t let anyone disrespect you.”
“What happened to the maids from before?”
“They’ve all been replaced, I can’t let anyone who doesn’t respect their queen work for me.”

Abril felt more at ease knowing that all those maids who had treated her so badly were no longer in the palace. Alessandro could see the relief on Abril’s face as he mentioned those maids were no longer in the palace, he hugged her leaving Koda between them and said,
“I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing?”
“For all the harm you suffered here, for all the humiliations you endured.”
“That’s in the past now, you’ve already apologized enough, and I’ve already forgiven you for it, so you don’t need to keep saying it.”
Alessandro gently caressed Abril’s cheek and said.
“You are wonderful, few people forgive and leave the past behind.”
“People who hold onto the past die a little each day, and I don’t want that, I prefer to live and I want it to be by your side, I don’t want what happened before to cloud our future.”
Alessandro gave her a gentle kiss on the lips and said.
“Without a doubt, you’re the best, I love you, Aby.”
Abril returned the kiss, pressing her lips softly and replied.
“I love you too, Lessan.”
Koda began to feel squished, he started moving nervously in Abril’s arms, she laughed and
said.
“We’re squashing Koda.”
Alessandro moved aside a bit and asked.
“Are you really going to keep that furball?”
“His name is Koda and yes. I tried to set him free once, he didn’t want to return to the forest.”
“If you’re happy with him, he can stay.”
Abril let out a long yawn, Alessandro said.
“You’re tired, today has been a long day, we should go to sleep.”
