Alessandro was heading to his office when he saw Abril walking in the garden with Noah, There was no maid accompanying her, which seemed strange to him, so he said to Gabriel.
“Go ahead, I’ll come later.”
Gabriel, seeing where the king was heading, thought to himself.
“Looks like it’s going to be another day where I have to handle everything.”
Gabriel knew that when the king met with his wife, he left all his work behind; he would disappear for the rest of the afternoon. That still seemed strange to Gabriel; he found it hard to believe that the king, who diligently fulfilled all his duties, would leave everything for her.
When Alessandro arrived where Abril and Noah were, he saw that Abril had red marks on her
arms, as if she had been grabbed very forcefully.
“What happened to you, why do you have red marks on your arms?”
Noah knelt and replied.
“I’m sorry, Majesty, if I had arrived earlier, she wouldn’t have been hurt.”
Alessandro, in a fury, asked Abril.
“Who dared to lay a hand on you?”
“Calm down, Lessan, I’m fine.”
“Noah, who was it?”
“It was one of the maids; she was a spy in the service of Lady Victoria Vampel.”
“Send that maid to the dungeon and ban Victoria from the palace; I don’t want to see her here
again.”
“Yes, Majesty.”
Noah went to carry out the king’s orders. Alessandro approached Abril, stroked the red marks on her arm, and asked.
“Do they hurt a lot?”
“They don’t hurt, I’m fine.”
“I thought all the rats had been eliminated; I suppose there are still some left. A second

cleaning will have to be done.”
“Lessan, what will happen to that maid?”
“The sin of touching a member of the royal family is death.*
“I don’t want anyone’s blood to be shed because of me, don’t harm her, just expel her from the palace.”
“That’s too light a punishment; if you don’t want me to kill her, I’ll cut off her hands for daring to touch you.”
“No, I don’t want you to hurt her.”
“She hurt you first, Aby.”
“Don’t do it, Lessan, please, I don’t want to be like my father, I’m asking you, don’t harm her expelling her from the palace is more than enough, I’m fine, it’s not as if she mortally wounded me.”
Alessandro felt his blood boil with rage; he saw expelling that maid as too light a punishment. Abril, seeing that he didn’t respond, said to him again.
“Promise me, Lessan, that you won’t harm that maid.”
Alessandro caressed her cheek and through clenched teeth said.
“Alright, I promise, I won’t harm her, I’ll just expel her from the palace.”
“Thank you.”
“This time I’ll be lenient because you’re asking me, but there won’t be a next time. You are very valuable to me, Abril; if anyone hurts you, I won’t hold back and will make them regret ever being born, no matter who they are.”
“Bloodshed only brings more blood, and I don’t want that.”
“Even if you don’t like it, sometimes shedding blood is necessary.”
“As long as I can avoid it, I will.”
“I will soon start the war, and in war, bloodshed is inevitable. Even if you ask me not to participate or to hold back, I won’t be able to.”
“I know, but this time you can choose whether to do it or not, so don’t do it.”
“Okay.”

Alessandro still had a lot of work pending, but he didn’t want to leave Abril alone, so he said.
to her.
“I need to head to my office to finish my work. Would you like to come with me?”
“I don’t want to be a burden.”
“You’re never a bother. Besides, there are too many nobles in the palace today. I’d feel more
at ease with you by my side.”
“Alright, then I’ll go with you.”
When they arrived at the office, Gabriel was surprised as he didn’t expect the king to return so soon, much less accompanied, he greeted Abril.
“Good morning, Your Majesty.”
“Good morning.”
Alessandro took his place behind the desk and said to Abril.
“You can make yourself comfortable. Gabriel, what are the most important matters for today?”
Gabriel responded by handing him some documents and said,
“You need to approve the budgets to start working on the granaries we will use to store provisions for the…”
Gabriel fell silent, unsure if he should say what they were for in front of the princess, Alessandro said to him.
“Continue.”
“To store provisions for when the war begins.”
“The borderlands are always the most affected during war, when the war starts, we must move those people to a safe place. I want my people to suffer as little as possible during the
war.”
“I had also thought about that, Your Majesty, but I haven’t yet decided where we could
relocate them.”
Alessandro stood up and went to look at a large map of the kingdom hanging on the wall and
said.
“The lands of Marquis Parret are far from the border but not too far. If we move them there,

they will be safe during the war
“That’s true, that’s a good idea, but do you think he will agree to host all those people?”
He’d better if he still wants to keep his title of marquis
Alessandro returned to his seat behind the desk, signed the budgets after reviewing them.

Tm sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing?”
Im not the only one who wants to avoid bloodshed, you do too. You also want to protect your people.”
“I know I can seem cruel at times, but that’s not the case. I just want my kingdom to be at peace, and to achieve that, war is imminent.”
Abril approached Alessandro and said to him.
“You work hard for this kingdom, I would also like to do the same. How can I help you?”
“Just having you by my side is more than enough.”
“I know I don’t have the required skills to help you, but I learn quickly. If you teach me, I can also be of assistance. I don’t want to be just a pretty doll decorating the room; I want to be your partner and support.”
“You really want to help me?”
“Yes, I want to stop being the useless princess who just strolls around the garden.”
Alessandro saw conviction in Abril’s eyes. He knew she was very serious, so he agreed to her
request.
“Alright, if that’s what you want, I’ll ask Gabriel to teach you how to handle some tasks.”
“Even if it doesn’t seem like it, I’m a quick learner. You only need to tell me something once, and I won’t forget it. My teacher when I was young, despite not liking me, always praised me for that. I learned to read and write at an early age, although they stopped teaching me when I turned 6 when they found out I didn’t possess magic.”
Alessandro was surprised to hear what Abril was saying. Although royalty started their studies early, they usually didn’t learn to read and write until the age of 7. He asked her.
“Abril, how old were you when you learned to read?”

“Yes, well, the heirs to the throne of the kingdom of Lalos usually take classes at an early age, although according to my teacher, I was the first to learn to read and write at such a young age. My brothers, for example, learned to read and write when they were 6 years old. They hated me for learning before them and never forgave me for it.”
“You almost never talk about your brothers, didn’t you get along with them?”
“They didn’t care for me.”
Alessandro saw a certain discomfort in Abril; it was clear she didn’t want to talk about them, so he decided not to insist further on that topic.
