Maya and Cassian were returning to the palace when the carriage suddenly stopped. Cassian got out of the carriage to see why they had stopped and said to Maya.
“Stay in the carriage, I’ll be right back.”
Maya ignored him and got out of the carriage.
“I’m not staying in the carriage, I’m going with you.”
“Alright, but stay behind me.”
Maya laughed and said to him.
“I think it would be better if you stayed behind me.”
They both went to the front where the coachman was, standing and blocking the carriage’s path were two hooded men. Cassian immediately drew his sword and asked.
“Who are you? What do you want?”
Both men removed their hoods; it was Ethan and another man whom Cassian did not recognize, but he did know that this man was an elf like Ethan because of the color of his eyes. Maya stepped forward upon recognizing Ethan and said to him.
“Ethan? What are you doing here?”
“We were looking for you, there’s something we need your help with.”
Cassian looked at Maya and asked in a low voice while pointing at Ethan’s companion.
“Do you know him?”
“Yes,”
Maya approached and asked.
“How did you find us?”
“That doesn’t matter.”
Maya thought her brother must have told them where they were, so she just asked.
“What do you need?”
“I want you to tell us more about the darkness.”

“I thought you said this time it would be our war and not yours.”
Cassian responded somewhat annoyed.
“The darkness is something that concerns us all, Ethan shouldn’t have said that.”
Dantriel replied.
“What do you want to know?”
“Everything you know about the darkness.”
“Alright, I will answer all your questions, but in return, you will have to answer mine.”
Dantriel nodded and replied.
“That seems like a fair deal to me.”

When Gabriel returned to the king’s office, Alessandro said to him.
“I want you to teach my wife about accounting and how to manage the palace’s budget.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
Gabriel said to Abril.
“Your Majesty, let’s go to another room, so as not to disturb the king.”
“Of course.”
Alessandro gave Gabriel a look that could kill as if to say.
You better take care of my wife.
Gabriel felt as if he would be killed if he were to be imprudent and rude to the princess. He headed towards the door with Alessandro’s intense gaze on his back and said to Abril.
“Please follow me, Your Majesty.”
Gabriel took Abril to the library. Abril had never been to that part of the palace, and she was very surprised to see so many books. The library was enormous, with high shelves full of books. As she looked around, Gabriel said to her.
“Your Majesty, we will start by reading some books, then I will teach you how to manage the budgets and some matters that are usually the queen’s responsibilities.”

Gabriel took a few books from a nearby shelf and handed them to Abril. She looked for a place to sit and began to read. Gabriel’s intense staring made Abril feel a bit uncomfortable,
“Sir Gabriel, it’s not necessary for you to stay here. I’ll be a while reading these books. I know you must be busy, so you can leave.”
“I can’t just leave you alone; His Majesty would kill me if I did.”
“But Alessandro needs you by his side, and I don’t want this to cause you any trouble.”
“Don’t worry, I don’t think that will be a problem. Leaving and leaving you here alone would be a problem.”
Abril continued reading, she only looked carefully at each page for a few minutes and turned the page. Gabriel thought the princess found reading boring and that was why she was only pretending to do it. He had seen many noble women act that way to get men’s attention, so he said to her.
“Your Majesty, if there’s anything you don’t understand, you can ask me, and if any of these books are too difficult, you can tell me.”
“I don’t find them difficult; I’m following along just fine.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Abril could see the expression of surprise and disbelief on Gabriel’s face. He didn’t believe her; he must have thought she was just pretending to understand, so she said to him.
“My study method might be a bit odd, but I’m genuinely understanding it.”
Gabriel wondered if the princess could read his mind.
“I haven’t read your mind, Sir Gabriel, it was because of the expression on your face. Imight not look it, but I’m pretty good at reading people, that’s how I managed to avoid problems, to avoid being punished.”
Gabriel had thought that the princess had led an easy life, but her words revealed otherwise, that her life had been tougher than he had imagined.
“I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable, Your Majesty.”
“Don’t worry, Sir Gabriel, you haven’t made me feel uncomfortable. I just want you to know that I’m really trying. I want to be of help to Alessandro, I want to be of help to this kingdom.”

Abril spent the whole day in the library, she was so absorbed in reading that she didn’t realize the day was ending until the light began to fade. She closed the book and looked at the garden bathed in the last rays of the sun. Just a few months ago, she would have thought it a waste to be studying indoors on such a beautiful day, but that had changed, she had changed.
She no longer cared only about her own well–being, and that was because she was no longer alone, because she had come to know what was beyond the palace walls, good people who deserved to be saved and protected. For the first time, she felt like she had a place to call
home.
Abril had resisted returning to the palace because she had bad memories of that place, but she had to leave all her fears behind, it was no longer the same, she was no longer alone, she had Alessandro and someone she could call a friend. She had always escaped reality by retreating to that cabin, but at that moment she was grateful for that encounter with Alessandro in the forest, grateful for opening her heart and discovering what love, friendship, and happiness truly meant.
