Sophia knew it might not be a good idea to present herself to Ethan using Abril’s body. Doing so would reveal her existence. However, she couldn’t let him keep searching for her, keep suffering because of her. She wanted to free him from the chains he had been carrying for more than 20
years.
“Could you leave us alone for a moment?”
Sophia said as she stared at Ethan. Cassian refused to leave them alone, but Maya and Dantriel dragged him out. When they were alone, Sophia took Ethan’s hand and said to him.
“I’m sorry, Ethan. Forgive me for all the harm I’ve caused you.”
Ethan caressed her cheek.
“It’s not true, you’re still alive.”
“I died 20 years ago, a few days after giving birth to my daughter. The body you’re touching is
hers.”
“How?”
“My daughter is special, Ethan. I was weak after giving birth and used all my magic, my very essence, to seal her magic. I wanted to keep her magic a secret so no one would use her as a
tool.”
“Why did you do something like that? Why didn’t you take her to the elf kingdom? She would have been safe there.”
Sophia shook her head.
“You know that’s not true. My daughter is of mixed heritage; she wouldn’t have been welcomed in the elf kingdom either. You know what they do to those of mixed heritage. Even if she were my daughter, Father wouldn’t have been lenient with her, so I decided to leave her among humans.”
“Why did you have to give your life?”
“She is my everything, Ethan, and even though it’s selfish of me, I want to ask you not to interfere in her life. Don’t try to take her to our kingdom, and I ask you to keep her existence a secret.”
“Sophia…”
“Promise me, Ethan, tell me you won’t do anything that will bring sadness to my little one.” “You say your soul is with her, your soul is still intact. You can use her body and stay by my side.”

Ethan said as he embraced her. Sophia pushed him away and said.
“No, I’ve already lived my life, I would never take hers.”
“But I can’t be without you, Sophia. I can’t accept that you’re no longer in this world, I can’t.”
Sophia took Ethan’s face in her hands and said.
“Even if you don’t accept it, I’m long dead.”
“Only your body.”

“And soon my soul will be too. That’s why I wanted to see you even though I knew it might not be a good idea.”
“What do you mean?”
“I used my own soul to create the last seal, but when it breaks, I will disappear completely.”
“No, I won’t allow that to happen, Sophia. I already lost you once, I can’t lose you again.”
“That will be inevitable. You know that darkness has awakened, right? Abril is the strongest light mage born in centuries; her power is unmatched. To win this war, her power will be necessary. She must break all the seals to unleash all her magic.”
“I don’t care what happens with the darkness, or with the whole world, Sophia. Understand that you’re the only one that matters to me. The rest can disappear completely, because a world without you can only turn to ashes.”
Ethan looked directly into her eyes and said.
“You are my everything and you know it.”
“Ethan, you know that I…”
Ethan stopped her from speaking, he kissed her suddenly and said.
“I know what you’re going to say. No matter how many times you tell me, in my heart there will only
be you.”
Alessandro entered just as Ethan was about to kiss her again. He used his wind magic to push
Ethan away and said with a voice as cold as ice.
“Don’t even think about putting a hand on my wife again if you want to stay safe.”
Dantriel drew his sword and pointed it at Alessandro.
“And if you touch my friend again, I will run you through with my sword.”

Alessandro wrapped his arms around Abril to protect her and said.
“Why have you truly come to my palace?”
“We have come to help, but if you attack your allies, that means you’re not trustworthy.”

“I should be the one to say that. In this palace, there’s only one thing that is untouchable, and that’s my wife. Anyone who dares to lay a hand on her will regret it.”
Sophia intervened before things turned violent.
“Enough, young king, I respect you for being my daughter’s husband, but watch your words. My friends are not to be taken lightly.”
“What are you saying, Abril?”
“Though this is your wife’s body, right now, I am not her.”
“What?”
“I am Sophia Larrens, daughter of the elf king Graham Larrens. They are my friends, and you owe
them respect.”
“You, you’re using my wife’s body.”
“She allowed me to. There was something I needed to discuss with them.”
“I don’t care who you are, but I won’t let you use my wife’s body as you ple
A misunderstanding was brewing, and Sophia wasn’t sure how to handle it. Initially, she had thought to tell Ethan to stop searching for her and to promise never to reveal Abril’s existence to her father, the elf king. What she never imagined was that Ethan would cling to her so much, and even less that Abril’s husband would find out what she was doing. She let out a heavy sigh and spoke with authority.
“Enough, stop acting like children. Since we’re all here, let’s take the opportunity to talk about the rise of darkness. That should be our primary concern right now.”
“And what do you know about it?”
Alessandro asked, still upset by the reprimand he had received.
“More than you can imagine, as I was once the wife of the king of Laios, Vritra Venobich. If anyone knows what Vritra is up to, it’s me.”
