Part II: Despair
Alessandro was extremely worried. Abril had cut off communication abruptly. He hadn’t slept all night. He tried to contact her countless times but had no success. His messenger bird arrived at dawn. Although he knew the bird was tired, he had to ask it to carry a message to Sirius–he needed to know that Abril was okay, or he would go insane.
Alessandro spent the entire morning feeling like his heart would stop at any moment because of the fear and anxiety he felt. He was in his office when Cassian arrived.
“Lessan, are you okay?”
“Cas.”
“I’ve been knocking on your door for a while. Since you didn’t answer, I had to come in. You look terrible. What happened?”
“It’s Abril.”
“Did something happen to her?”
Alessandro ran his hand through his hair and told him in a trembling voice filled with fear, “I don’t know. Yesterday, I was talking to her using the pendants Maya gave me, but suddenly there was a loud noise and a commotion. She cut off communication, and ever since then, I
haven’t heard from her.”
“Have you tried contacting her again?”
“Yes, all night, but she doesn’t respond. Maybe she’s not wearing the necklace; I’m afraid something has happened to her, Cassian. I’m really afraid of losing her.”
“Don’t worry, brother. Taren and Sirius are with her. I’m sure she’ll be fine. Maybe she didn’t know how to use the necklace, and that’s why she didn’t wear it. Did you explain how to use it to her?”
Alessandro remembered that his note had been very vague and that he hadn’t told her she had to wear the necklace at all times. Cassian, seeing his brother hesitate to respond, said to him, “I don’t think you told her.”
“I wasn’t very clear in explaining how it works.”
“Maybe she was in a place where she couldn’t talk, and that’s why she cut off
communication. She’ll surely contact you soon.”
“But-”

“Lessan, I understand your anxiety. I have also been far from the woman I love, and I know it’s not easy. You always think of the worst, but think positively. Think that she is doing well and will soon be here with you.”
“You’re right. Maybe it was just my imagination. It’s just that knowing she’s in such a dangerous place, facing monsters and who knows what other dangers, terrifies me.”
“Abril is very powerful. The monsters are no problem for her. If they attack her, she’ll turn
them into ashes with her silver flames.”
“I know, but the monsters are not the only thing that worries me. She’s going to meet her brother, and her sister is still free. We don’t know when she might attack again.”
“You’re right, but I don’t think Enzo is capable of doing anything. He’s prevented by the bond that ties them together from the union they made. As for Cira, Abril has already defeated her once. If she gets in her way again, I’m sure she can take her down again.”
Cassian’s words calmed Alessandro’s anxiety a little.
“Thank you, Cas. You always know how to calm me down.”
“That’s what brothers are for.”
Shortly after Enzo left the room, a servant entered and led them to their rooms, which were all close to each other. This brought them some relief as they didn’t think it was a good idea to separate while being in enemy territory. Before entering their rooms, Sirius said, “If you need anything, don’t shout unless you’re dying. At the moment, I just want to have a good
bath and rest.”
He said it jokingly, but Abril and Taren understood what he meant: if something strange happened, they just had to give a shout.
When the servant opened the door, Taren and Sirius entered first. They checked the room to make sure there was no danger, pretending to admire how beautiful the room was.
Sirius said, “I hope our rooms are as beautiful as this one.”
Upon hearing that, Abril entered confidently. Taren and Sirius went to their rooms and exaggeratedly praised their rooms to let it be known that everything was fine.
After that, the servant informed them that they could request whatever they wanted; they just had to call a maid by pulling a cord next to the bed. Everyone closed their doors, but that servant remained in the hallway as if he was watching them.
Abril felt tired. She sat on the bed. It was so soft that for a moment she thought about lying down, closing her eyes, and sleeping like a log, but then she remembered that she had ended

her call abruptly. He must be very worried.
She took the pendant out of her pocket, put it around her neck, and started calling Alessandro, thinking of him and saying his name.
“Alessandro, are you there?”
Alessandro always wore the pendant, so when he heard Abril’s voice, he felt as if a huge weight had been lifted off him. He felt like he could breathe again.
“Aby, are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m fine.”
“Yeah. I was really worried. I tried to reach you, but you didn’t answer. What happened?”

“A group of drunk people caused a big commotion in the streets, so I ended the call. I didn’t answer because I had the pendant in my pocket and didn’t hear you.”
Alessandro felt relieved to hear that nothing bad had happened.
“Thank God you’re okay. I thought something bad had happened and that’s why you weren’t answering.”
“I’m sorry for worrying you.”
“I think it was partly my fault. I should have told you that the pendant only works if it’s touching your skin. So wear it all the time, that way we can communicate at all times.”
“Agreed. I’ll keep it on at all times. I won’t take it off again. By the way, I am at the palace of Lajos.”
“How has everything gone?”
“Good. I haven’t had any problems with my brother.”
“Please be careful. I don’t trust him at all.”
“Me neither, but at the moment, I don’t think he would dare to do something to me. He needs me to save his kingdom.”
“Still, be careful. We don’t know if he might be helping your sister.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll have it under control.”
“Hope to see you soon.”
Abril still wanted to continue helping the inhabitants of Laios. That’s why, no matter how
