Part II: Broken Relationships

Barto went to look for his father, who was standing in the garden where Maya had disappeared, staring intently at the tree through which the fairy queen had opened the portal to the land of the fairies. Ryan seemed taciturn and introspective, maintaining a tense silence and appearing deeply pained. Barto had only seen his father like this once before, and that was when his mother had died.

“Dad, are you okay?”

“I can’t stop thinking about your sister, wondering if she’s alright.”

“The fairy queen seemed willing to help her; I think she’ll be fine.”

“This is my fault.”

“What?”

“I knew that unions between fairies and humans were forbidden, but I still didn’t stop your sister. This is all

my fault.”

“What do you mean by that, Dad?”

“Maya was fine until the marriage ceremony ended. I believe her pain was caused by the marriage mark.”

“I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I’m not going to keep asking myself pointless questions. I’m going to find my own answers. I’ll go to the land of the fairies and bring Maya back.”

“No, don’t do anything unnecessary.”

“Are you not going to do anything to save Maya?”

“No, and neither will you.”

“I don’t understand. Don’t you care about my sister?”

“I do care, but there’s nothing I can do, and what you can do won’t make Maya happy.”

Ryan placed a hand on his son’s shoulder and said, “If what you told me is true, Cassian will find a way to bring Maya back. But if you go, you won’t be able to return. I don’t want to lose you, Barto, so don’t do anything foolish.”

Barto clenched his fists tightly, feeling extremely frustrated that he couldn’t help his sister. “I promised

Mom that I would take care of Maya.”

“And I promised her that I would take care of both of my children. I know how you feel; I feel the same

way.”

“So, should I just stay here and do nothing?”

“Yes, even though it doesn’t seem like it, waiting is for the brave.”

“Mom was human, you loved her. I know for sure because you show your pain every day for having lost

her. But why did you never marry her?”

“Out of fear. I was afraid of losing her.”

“You lost her anyway. Do you regret not marrying her?”

“Well… maybe a little, but you can’t go back in time. I have to look forward and live, because I’m sure that’s

what she would have wanted.”

After breakfast, Abril went to find Kiara, who looked both upset and worried.

“Has something happened?”

“No.”

“I’ve spoken with Alessandro; we can leave whenever you want.”

“Then let’s go. It’s not like I have anything better to do here.”

Kiara returned to her room, took some of her things, packed them in a bag, and said, “Let’s go.”

“Did you say goodbye to Barto?”

“He doesn’t care, so why should I say goodbye to him?”

“Did you two have a fight?”

“No, he just made it clear that he doesn’t choose me, so let’s go.”

Kiara was fuming, and although she said otherwise, it seemed she had had a heated argument with Barto.

Even though she was in a hurry to go to the land of the fairies, she didn’t want her cousin to leave angry

with the man she loved.

“You should talk to Barto before you go. You came all the way here just to be with him. If you disappear

without saying anything, you’ll make him suffer.”

“For him to suffer, I would have to matter to him, but that’s not the case, so it doesn’t matter. We’ve said

everything we needed to say.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure. So let’s go.”

Abril and Kiara met with Alessandro and Lissana in the garden where Maya and Cassian had disappeared. To Kiara’s surprise, Barto and his father were also there. When Barto saw the bag on Kiara’s shoulder, he asked, “Where are you going?”

Kiara was still hurt and very angry from the conversation she had had with Barto, so she ignored his

question. It was Abril who answered, “We’re going to the land of the fairies.”

“Were you planning to leave without saying anything?” Barto asked Kiara, but she continued to resist

answering.

“Kiara, please! Talk to me!”

“A while ago, you made it very clear that you don’t care what I have to say.”

“Kiara, I…”

“Before you say anything, you should know that it’s not because I’m following you. Yesterday, Abril asked

me to accompany her to the land of the fairies. You told me this morning.”

“Barto is not going to the land of the fairies,” Ryan responded instead of his son.

Kiara looked at Barto. “I was going to tell you when I got back to the room.”

“It doesn’t matter anymore. That doesn’t change what you think about me.”

“Kiara…”

“I don’t care what you have to say. You made it very clear that I will never be your priority. I was a fool to

think you loved me the same way I love you.”

Barto approached Kiara, trying to take her hand, but she didn’t allow it. She slapped his hand away and

said, “Don’t touch me.”

“I love you, Kiara.”

“I was willing to give up everything for you. I was willing to fight my mother if necessary, but you… for you, your family is the most important thing, and apparently, I’m not part of it.”

Kiara turned around and started to walk away. Barto ran after her, grabbed her arm, and said, “Please

stop!”

“I don’t want to. I don’t want to keep talking to you. Can’t you see how much this hurts me?”

Kiara placed her hand on Barto’s arm and said, “Sleep.”

Suddenly, Barto began to feel very sleepy. His eyes grew heavy, and no matter how hard he tried, he

couldn’t keep them open. He fell to the ground, asleep. Everyone stared at her, and she said, “He’s fine, I’ve

just put him to sleep.”

Kiara left Barto on the ground, touched the trunk of the tree, and after saying a few words in an unknown

language, the portal that had been closed reopened.

“Let’s go, I can’t keep the portal open for long,” Kiara said to Abril.

Alessandro handed Abril the baby, kissed them both on the forehead, and said, “Take care, Aby, and take

good care of our little one.”

Abril kissed him on the lips and said, “See you soon, my love.”

Abril stood next to Kiara, and before crossing the portal, Ryan said to Kiara, “You should have listened to

what he had to say.”

“For what? It wouldn’t have changed anything.”

Part II: A Favor

After crossing the portal, Kiara, Lissana, and Abril found themselves surrounded by guards. The portal they had opened led directly to the garden of the fairy queen’s palace.

“I am Kiara Babette, princess of the fairy kingdom. I request an audience with your queen,” Kiara declared.

The guards escorted them to the room where the fairy queen was seated on her throne, radiating beauty and tranquility. She asked, “What brings you here?”

“We want to know how Maya is doing,” Kiara responded.

“You opened a portal without permission and came all the way here just to ask about her well–being?”

“Yes, may we see her?”

“You may see your prince at any time, but not Maya. She is still recovering and is in a special room, so you

cannot see her.”

“Your Majesty, I would like to ask a favor.”

The fairy queen adjusted her position on the throne and asked mockingly, “And what favor do you wish to

ask, and what will I gain in return?”

“My daughter needs to grow quickly. Her magic is too much for such a small body, and time works differently here.”

“I suppose the favor you want is for her to stay here, but I still don’t know what I will gain from this.”

“I believe Your Majesty has already received a reward from me. I fought and protected your kingdom from

the darkness.”

“And you received something for it; I freed Maya.”

“Your Majesty, when I was here, I did much for your kingdom and your people. I hope you can help me now

that I need it.”

The fairy queen couldn’t deny the truth in Kiara’s words, so she couldn’t refuse her request. “Very well, you

may stay as long as you wish with your daughter.”

“I cannot stay long.”

“Do you want me to hasten your daughter’s growth?”

“Is that possible?”

“In my lands, anything is possible, but I do not recommend it. I can make her body grow, but her mind would remain that of a baby. It is every little memory and moment of our lives that shapes who we are. If

your daughter has none of that, she would be an empty shell.”

“I understand. Then I will ask you to take care of my daughter.”
